Welcome Back

Welcome back to Term 2, which is 10 weeks in length and concludes on Friday 27 June. We have a number of new families to our school this term and we hope you have had a smooth transition. Buderim Mountain State School is a terrific school and I’m sure you will enjoy your time with us. We ask that all families please see the calendar dates within this newsletter so that you are aware of upcoming events for each year level. Event dates can also be found on our website.
P&C AGM
Thank you to all parents who were able to attend the most recent P&C Annual General Meeting. These meetings are an excellent forum to learn more about the operation of the school and assist with planning P&C events and projects. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the tireless work of Maja Grose (President), Megan Colless (Treasurer), Sophia Agneskis (Secretary) and Rachel O’Brien (P&C Operations Manager) for their work throughout the 2024 school year. Their dedication to their roles and the improvement of our school is impressive and on behalf of the parent body, I would like to acknowledge their contribution to Buderim Mountain State School - the support of the whole P&C committee and volunteer group as well as our Business Unit Managers and staff is also appreciated.
One of the major projects that the P&C has contributed to in 2024 has been funding over $1 million to enhance our new school hall construction including air conditioning, sound/lighting/curtains, a commercial kitchen, acoustics, a dividing net, chairs and sporting equipment. In 2024, our P&C also funded the set-up of the new Banksia Café, new uniform shop and upgrade of the OSHC facilities as well as holding a range of events for our school community. They also funded a number of projects including the Justin Coulson parent and student sessions, garden club supplies, resources for the chaplaincy program, Year 6 Graduation, resources and support for the Performing Arts program, the staff appreciation day and the weekly breakfast club. We are extremely lucky to have this incredible level of support from our P&C.
A big thank you and congratulations to our P&C team for 2025:

In Our Classrooms
Prep ES
On the 26th of March, Prep ES took a trip to the SG Buderim Bakery. We enjoyed our stroll through the town together and were very lucky to have Mr Readshaw join us for our journey! The SG Bakery had baked us some fresh hot cross buns which we were very excited to gobble up because our walk had made us work up an appetite! We love exploring the special places in our town and celebrating important events together.
We would like to thank the staff of the SG Bakery for warmly welcoming our Prep children.
‘The best education does not happen at a desk, but rather engaged in everyday living – hands on, exploring, in active relationship with life.’ Vince Gowman
Year 1 Buderim Forest Excursion
Exploring Living Things in Year 1
Last term in Science, our Year 1 students explored the fascinating world of living things and the environments they call home. As part of this unit, we were fortunate to take an excursion to Buderim Forest Park, where the Sunshine Coast Environment Centre hosted an engaging, hands-on learning experience.
Throughout the day, students explored a variety of habitats—including the rainforest, grassy areas, and the creek—discovering which creatures live in each environment. A highlight of the excursion was investigating the health of the creek's ecosystem, where students used nets to gently search for small aquatic creatures.
It was a wonderful day of learning, discovery, and fun, thoroughly enjoyed by students, teachers, and our fantastic parent helpers.

1TB
This term, our enthusiastic Year 1 students from 1TB have been exploring the wonderful world of information reports! With curious minds and plenty of questions, they’ve been learning how to gather facts, label diagrams and how to sort information into headings like Appearance, Habitat, Diet and Movement. They’ve discovered how to use non-fiction texts to research – and they’re loving it.
Well done, Year 1 — we’re proud of the amazing effort you’re putting into becoming little experts and sharing your knowledge with the world!

2SM
Some words from the students:
I enjoyed the butterfly life-cycle in term 1. I am excited to read information books about animals in term 2. Harper
In Science we learned about life cycles. In life cycles we learned about the life stages of insects and bugs. The best thing about school is learning. Tom
I liked learning about life cycles of mealworms, butterflies and frogs. The coolest thing was when the butterflies came out of their cocoons and had to wait a little for their wings to dry. Lenny
I love doing Math, Science and colouring in. I liked making a giant clock in the classroom. Bree
3KC
In 3KC this term, we are learning about Information Reports in English. We have read a few on animals and have already learned how to find factual information on specific animals. We are looking forward to searching for more information on different animals on the National Geographic Kids site on our classroom laptops.
In Maths, we have been working hard on our addition and subtraction problem-solving strategies as well as our multiplication facts using arrays. We have been so busy already this term.
4DJ
In 4DJ we have really enjoyed making lots of new friends in term 1 and getting to know our awesome teachers.
Most of us loved Year 4 Maths last term, learning more about fraction equivalence and our decimal numbers. It was hard at first, but we have really gotten the hang of it now. We have also worked hard on seeing all the patterns in our multiplication tables and getting much faster with them. Every week we also have homework activities to complete on mathletics.com. We have a lot of students in our class who have already reached their silver certificates!
In English last term, we watched some excellent short films and had to write and present engaging, exciting film reviews to our class. We learnt lots about the language features to use to make our reviews great, and we had a lot of fun presenting them too.
We enjoyed, studying rocks and washing away sandcastles in Science for erosion, and our favourite activity in HASS was creating our Values Trees. Most students say they really love Art most of all, and we have done lots of painting, oil pastel creations and sometimes just relaxing colouring to chill.
We are looking forward to EVERYTHING in Term 2.
5JD
Last term, Mrs McConnel, Mr Jackson and Mrs Croxton held auditions for our 2025 musical which is Finding Nemo. Many people auditioned for lead roles and featured roles, though they only had 65 spots. Then there were call backs and I was lucky enough to get one of those. For our first audition we each sang the National Anthem and presented a dialogue. If you got a call back you had to sing a short song from the production and a different dialogue. After weeks of watching auditions, they were able to put the cast together. Now that we have started rehearsals at break times, before and after school and some Sundays, it feels like we’re bringing it to life! Elka
After the two-week holiday and Easter, we started looking at ANZAC Day. We made poppies and put them on our wreath before the ANZAC Ceremony. Jack
This term for ANZAC Day we had an all-school parade with parents welcome and special guests. Then, for the public holiday, we did the ANZAC march from Woolies to the Buderim Mountain celebration gate. Once that was done, we had the Buderim Service with student leaders, Mr Jenkins, the cadets, other schools and special guests representing ADF (which stands for Australian Defence Force). My dad was a special guest and he laid a wreath. It was so much fun. Amelie
6GE
This semester the students of 6GE are taking part in the “Potential Project” with Chappy Alexia. So far, we have had three sessions focussing on the values of: Choice, Willingness, Trust and Trustworthiness. The students are enjoying the team building activities very much and are very articulate in the reflection component after each session. During the most recent discussion, they shared how they were reluctant to take part in the ‘Human Ladder’ task as they thought it would be too hard and too scary. Chappy and I were very proud when every single student in the class had a go, without hesitation, with all of them making it across. It was wonderful to see their smiles showing their sense of achievement. They commented about how they had to put their trust in others and others had to put trust in them. We can’t wait for the rest of the fun sessions where we will be covering the values of: Reliability, Encouragement, Courage, Self-Awareness, Resilience, Acceptance, Optimism, Gratitude, Tolerance and more.

Easter Hat Parade
What a blast!! I am not sure if any craft shops on the Sunshine Coast had any supplies left in stock – because the Buderim Mountain State School Easter Hat Parade on the last day of Term 1 what simply stunning. The effort put into each and every hat was incredible and the children wore their masterpieces with pride. 😊 A huge thank you goes out to all of our families for supporting this event, both with your creations and your attendance on the day. The smiles were evident from everyone. Here are a couple of quotes from our preppies:
“I loved all the hats. I really loved the little chickens on mine.” Hallie
“The chicken dance was my favourite part.” Abbie
“I loved making the hat. I really like the bunny tape I had on my hat.” Lana
“I liked the chicken dance and I won a special prize with an Easter bunny chocolate. I ate it all!” Matteo
Thanks again to everyone. We can’t wait to see what next year’s look like!

School ANZAC Day Ceremony
2025 is the first time in the school’s recent history that we have held our own Buderim Mountain State School ANZAC Day service.
On Thursday the 24th of April, our School and Vice Captains led the service and did a wonderful job reciting the ‘In Flanders Fields’ poem, presenting the ANZAC Requiem and delivering the Ode of Remembrance. Our choir, senior string and senior band ensembles beautifully put together renditions of Waltzing Matilda, the Australian National Anthem and New Zealand National Anthem.
A huge thank you to the Honourable Brent Mickelberg for attending and presenting a speech during our service, Tess Banner bugler, Bruce Holmes veteran and Sophia Agneskis P&C President by being our special guests and attending our ceremony.

Buderim Community ANZAC Day Service

It was very pleasing to see so many Buderim Mountain State School students participate in the annual ANZAC Day ceremony and march on Friday the 25th of April. Students marched from Woolworths wearing full school uniform, down Main Street, ending at the school ready for the ANZAC ceremony. Thank you to all students, families and staff who participated.
Instrumental Music Workshops
We are thrilled to share the exciting highlights from the recent Super Sharp Seniors Workshops held for Year 5 and 6 students at Buderim Mountain State School.
The workshops brought together young musicians from four different schools: Buderim Mountain, Mountain Creek, Mooloolaba State Schools and Mountain Creek State High School. With over 100 enthusiastic students participating over the two days, the atmosphere was charged with energy and excitement. 🎺🥁🎷
These workshops were organised to provide students with the invaluable opportunity to immerse themselves in playing within a larger ensemble alongside peers of a similar level. They had the privilege of working with other Instrumental Music teachers, Ms Courtney Duncan, and were guided by the expertise of Mr John Thomas, retired Co-ordinator of Band, Brass and Woodwind from Matthew Flinders Anglican College.
Beyond the musical sessions, students engaged in some enjoyable activities including rhythmic games and creating their own rhythm raps which added an extra layer of enjoyment to the experience.
A big thank-you goes out to our incredible parent helpers – Dave Howard, Andrea Johnson, Lauren McCarthy, Amy Skipper and Aidan Sheerin who generously volunteered their time and energy to ensure the smooth running of the workshops. Your support was invaluable, and we are truly grateful for your dedication. To all the parents and families who joined us for the culminating concert, we thank-you for your unwavering support of Instrumental Music. We are certain you were as impressed as we were by the remarkable progress the students made in just one day.
Overall, the workshops were a resounding success thanks to the dedication and hard work of our students. We are incredibly proud of their achievements and have no doubt that these experiences will encourage and inspire them to continue on their musical journey with passion and commitment. 🎺🥁🎷 🎶👏
Thank-you.
Musically yours,
Margot Payne

Road Safety
A reminder to all students and families to use the supervised crossings or to cross at lights when entering or leaving the school grounds. Numerous parents have voiced concerns about students and parents crossing roads between traffic. Students have been reminded to cross at lights when the traffic lights are Red, and the walk symbol is green. Thank you for keeping our students safe by using designated crossings.

Stop, Drop & Go: Elizabeth Street
This term, we have received communication from numerous concerned parents about drivers needing to ensure they drive slowly and check for pedestrians walking along the footpath and when collecting students. Please be mindful when entering or leaving the bowls club carpark during drop off and pick up times. The image to the right shows the area that has been raised as a concern.

Residents of Elizabeth Street have requested parents be mindful of parking on the yellow lines in front of driveways as this limits their capacity to enter and exit their property.
Parking – Drop off and Collection Zones
We would like to request for parents to not park in the Uniting Church and St Marks grounds. Public car parking is available in various spots around the school grounds but please be aware of parking restrictions to avoid council issued fines. Our school website has a series of videos on Traffic Safety specifically around our school. Follow the link to view these: Traffic Safety Videos or Link: https://buderimmountainss.eq.edu.au/our-community/our-school-in-the-community

Our PERKS lesson in Week 3 for Years 1 to 6 will be focussed on Empathy.
The lesson will explore the following:
What is Empathy?
Putting ourselves in other’s shoes to try to understand how they are thinking or feeling – See our poster
Empathy is not…
It’s not what you would do – it’s all about the other person. It is not feeling sorry for the other person or trying to fix things for them.
Why is Empathy important?
It helps us to be understanding and supportive and be a better friend
How do we show Empathy?
- Look out for feeling clues – facial expressions, body language, voice tone.
- Be a good listener
- Be supportive and do something helpful.
- Let people know you care.
The POWER of Empathy!!!!
When we put ourselves in someone else’s shoes we are able to:
- See through someone else’s eyes
- Listen through someone else’s ears
- Feel through someone else’s heart
Students will also try some practical examples of using empathy…….
Visit the PERKS section in our school library to check out the great picture books on Empathy to share at home.
PERKS Peaceful Place Coming Soon!

The PERKS Peaceful Place will be a dedicated space within our school which has been designed to support students who find the playground environment overwhelming. This initiative aims to foster our student’s wellbeing by offering a quiet and nurturing environment for all ages to relax and recharge during lunch breaks. Additionally, this space will be available for classroom bookings to facilitate mindfulness practices and group restoration, ensuring that wellbeing remains a priority throughout our school day.
Change in Parent Details
There are times when we may need to contact parents and carers. Do we have your most up to date contact details? If not, please contact the school on info@buderimmountainss.eq.edu.au so we can update our records. These details include parent/carer’s name, address, phone numbers, email address and emergency contact details. Please remember to contact the school if any of these details change.

Playgrounds: Keeping our children safe
To assist with keeping all our students safe, we would like to remind everyone that our playground equipment is not permitted for use before or after school. The equipment requires a teacher on duty to supervise all children for safe play. We appreciate your support with following school procedures and to ensure our children are safe.
Uniforms
Thank you to all families who ensure students are in full school uniform each day. As the weather will begin to get cooler this term, it is important that all students continue to wear the correct Buderim Mountain State School winter uniform. QParents
Our school has been using QParents in recent years for all year levels. All new families should have received an email inviting you to register for QParents. If you have not received this email, please check your spam or junk box, and if you cannot find the email, please contact the school office so we can assist. In order to register for QParents, you will require the regular 100 points of ID. Attached to this newsletter is an outline of the types of ID accepted. QParents is a simple way to pay for any school excursions or fees without having to send money or paperwork back to the school. Parents can also gain an update on your child’s attendance and submit absence information. Finally, parents can update personal details automatically and student's past report cards can be accessed via QParents. If you have not received an invitation, please advise us immediately.
If you are an existing parent and have yet to register for QParents, please either call the office on 54772777 or email info@buderimmountainss.eq.edu.au
To register for Qparents, you will need to follow 4 easy steps
- Check that you have received your unique invitation code sent to your email. This also includes your child’s EQ ID number (if you haven’t received this, email our HR team to assist via resources@buderimmountainss.eq.edu.au),
- You need an active email account
- Access to 100 points of ID to verify your identity. (See table below)
- Go to https://qparents.qld.edu.au and register
Late Arrivals and Early Departures
To ensure the safety of our students, we kindly remind you of the procedures for dropping off late students and picking up children early.
- Late Arrivals: If your child arrives late to school, please bring them to the Health Room to sign them in. This helps us keep accurate attendance records and ensures your child is properly accounted for.
- Early Pickups: If you need to pick up your child before dismissal, please go to the Health Room and bring a valid photo ID. The Health Room staff will call your child’s classroom, and your child will meet you there.
These procedures help us maintain a safe and organized environment for all students. Thank you for your cooperation!
Absence Text Messaging System
All Queensland public schools are required to implement a text messaging system to follow up on unexplained absences. Effectively, if a child has not arrived at school and a parent has not informed the school, it is a requirement for the school, to send a text message requesting a reason for the absence on a daily basis.
We ask that parents assist by ensuring all absences are explained on a daily basis. From time to time, we predict that we may make some errors with texts and ask for your support as we fulfil this process. It would be appreciated if parents can still respond by text to let us know. While we will aim to not have any errors, with over 1170 students at our school, this may occur occasionally.
The following options are currently in place to contact the school regarding absences with QParents being the preferred option. To avoid unexplained absences, please report the absence before 8:00 am.
- QParents: https://qparents.qld.edu.au/ This is our preferred method to report reasons for absences to the school.
- Student Absentee Call Line (5477 2760)
Emails and Notes: We are aware that absences can be reported via emails and notes, but we encourage parents to use QParents. Emails and notes can be processed but are often delivered at varying times or double-handled by teachers and other staff. This may cause a time-lag in accurate roll marking. Thank you for your assistance with this.
Dog Owners
Recently, we have had enquiries from members of our school community in relation to bringing dogs onto the school grounds. While the State Government doesn’t allow dogs on school premises at any time, we try to work in with the Buderim community and ask all families and community members to assist with the following guidelines.
Buderim Mountain State School, including the oval, is not a designated off-leash dog park. No dogs are allowed on the premises:
- Between 7:30 am and 4:00 pm school days
- When the school oval is being used by someone paying to hire the oval before 7:30am and after 4:00pm
- When students from Buderim Mountain State School Outside School Hours Care are using the oval or playgrounds before 7:30am and after 4:00pm
We ask dog owners to please clean up after your dog and remove all dog droppings from the school site (do not leave in school bins).
2025 Facility Hire
If you are interested in hiring our facilities (outside of school hours) in 2025, please complete an Expression of Interest. Facilities that are available include: oval, pool, library courtyard, hall and the tennis courts.

Outside School Hours Care
Parent Testimonial 💌
"We are all very grateful to have such a good facility and the team are amazing. Recruitment and retention have been consistent and the whole vibe is great in our opinion. Couldn't ask for more. Thank you all for your efforts."
We are deeply proud of the award-winning OSHC at our school, and the incredible experiences, memories and outcomes experienced by children in the various programs run before school, after school and during vacation care.
It goes far beyond snacks and supervision; children at OSHC are given a broad range of opportunities to grow, develop social skills, nurture friendships, enjoy recreational experiences which challenge them, learn from and educational experiences which extend upon their learning at home and school, and to help develop important life skills that will stay with them for life.
Our OSHC, as assessed by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA), exceeds expectation in all areas, indicating exceptional education and care. It was confirmed by an independent national authority, and it’s spoken every day by the OSHC families we are so proud to service. 💛
