P&C AGM
Thank you to all parents who were able to attend the most recent P&C Annual General Meeting. These meetings are an excellent forum to learn more about the operation of the school and assist with planning P&C events and projects. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the tireless work of Rachel O’Brien (President), Terry Colless (Vice President), Megan Colless (Treasurer) and Sophia Agneskis (Secretary) for their work throughout the 2022 school year. Their dedication to their roles and the improvement of our school is impressive and on behalf of the parent body, I would like to acknowledge their contribution to Buderim Mountain State School - the support of the whole P&C committee and volunteer group is also appreciated.
One of the major projects that the P&C would like to achieve in 2023 incorporates designating funds to enhance our new school hall construction and continuing to improve our tuckshop, uniform shop and OSHC services. Please view the website events calendar to see the fundraising events that are planned for the year so that all families can participate and we can achieve these goals.

School-lead review school
Our school is scheduled for a review this year. The Department of Education regularly reviews the curriculum, teaching and learning practices of Queensland state schools.
Our school has been selected to undertake a school-led review which will harness our school’s drive for continuous improvement through collaborative inquiry and empower our staff and school community to lead aspects of the review process. This is a terrific achievement for our school, with approximately only 10% of all Queensland Public schools selected for this type of review each year. This selection is based on our school being on a positive trajectory and achieving at a high standard in a range of systemic data sets.
A school-led review consists of 2 phases:
- evaluation conducted by the school
- validation conducted by School and Region Reviews (SRR).
Firstly, across Term 2, we will be conducting our own evaluation. This will include speaking with staff and key stakeholders. The school will produce a report framed by the National School Improvement Tool.
Following the school-led evaluation, the department’s School and Regional Review branch will validate the school’s evaluation. Members of the branch will visit our school on the 12th and 13th of June to engage in conversations with a cross-section of staff, students, parents and community members. They will also analyse key data sets and peruse a range of key documents to produce a report for our school community.
Key findings from the review will be made available to parents and the community on our school website.
During 2022, we gave parents an opportunity to provide feedback in regards to areas the school is achieving well in, and areas for improvement. We will be incorporating the data from this survey into our school review. We do encourage anyone who is interested to have their say, as your feedback is important and will help us continue to deliver a great education for our students, to email the school on info@budermmountainss.eq.edu.au
More information about the review process is available from the department’s website at www.schoolreviews.education.qld.gov.au.
2024 Prep Enrolments

What a wonderful way to end the term 1 with our annual Easter Hat Parade.
Prep and Year 1 had a wonderful time showing off their amazing hats. Thank you, parents and caregivers, for the huge effort in making all the Easter hats look sensational.

Throughout the year, the leaders participate in a range of activities such as running soccer competitions, presenting on Parades and being members of committee groups within the school. Over the next few terms, the student leaders will be letting our school community know a little more about themselves.

Facilities Upgrade
Over the school holidays, our school was again a construction zone with many different facilities projects occurring. This has included new carpet in 4 blocks throughout the school, as well as new guttering and roofing to several of our covered pathways. One of the most exciting upgrades for students will be the new sport courts, adjacent to the senior covered play area, which are due for completion by the end of Term 2. The courts will have half-court basketball and a new handball square.
Construction of our new school hall, which is to be built on the old basketball courts and adjacent carpark, has begun, and it is estimated be completed by the beginning of the 2024 school year. The hall will be an excellent facility to be used by all students.
So, while our school grounds could be turned into a long-term construction zone, the final outcome will be terrific for our school community. Thank you for your patience as these projects are completed.
1-2-3 Magic Parenting Course
Understanding Emotions and how best to support our children.
We would like to invite parents to attend an upcoming series of three workshops designed to help parents with understanding emotion and behaviour. Our Guidance Office, Deb Price, will be sharing the 1-2-3 MAGIC Program with parents. The workshops will include information on:
- Understanding and dealing with challenging behaviour within or outside the home.
- Encouraging and focusing on good behaviour e.g. going to bed, doing homework, eating
- Strengthening your relationship with your child through consistency of routine and expectations, trust, the use of praise, active listening and shared fun.
The three sessions will be held at Buderim Mountain State School in the Chaplain’s room across from the School Tuckshop. These three sessions will be held on Friday the 19th and 26th of May and the 2nd of June, 2023. Each session will run 9:00am-12pm. Morning Tea to be supplied.
Participants will receive a workbook linked to the program at no cost.
Please note that the sessions are for all parents, regardless of whether your child attends Buderim Mountain State School or not. Arrangements will need to be made for the care of any non-school age child(ren).
Should you wish to attend please contact Buderim Mountain State School by phoning the school office on 5477 2777 or drop in personally to let the office staff know you would like to attend.
Road Safety
A reminder to all students to remember to use the supervised crossing on Tindale Avenue each afternoon after departing the school via Elizabeth Street or Clithero Avenue. Families are also reminded to only cross at the pedestrian crossing on Main Street when the traffic lights are Red, and the walk symbol is green.
PERKS
In our PERKS lesson in Years 1 to 6 in Week 7 Term 1, students learnt more about RESILIENCE and MINDSET where they revisited what they already knew and were introduced to new knowledge about our
- SELF-TALK
Self-talk is the way we talk to ourselves or our “inner voice”. Only we can hear this voice in our head.
Self-talk is all the things we say to ourselves, without actually saying them out loud. We might not be aware that we’re doing it, but we most certainly are.
The type of self-talk we use is important because it has a big impact on how we feel and what we do.
As you will see in the attached poster, our Self-Talk can be negative and positive.
The students were introduced to the terms:
- INNER CRITIC &
- INNER COACH
Negative self-talk belongs to our INNER CRITIC while Positive self-talk belongs to our INNER COACH.
What are the benefits of positive self-talk? (THESE ARE THE KEY MESSAGES FOR OUR STUDENTS)
- Listening to our INNER COACH is a great way to develop skills to build our RESILIENCE.
- We all have moments when we listen to our INNER CRITIC – the goal is to be able to recognise that this voice is just our worries speaking.
- Our INNER COACH doesn’t guarantee that we will succeed every time.
- Our INNER COACH reminds us to keep going, try again, not give up, work in our stretch zone.
- Our INNER COACH can give us courage to try something new, work through our worries and learn from our mistakes.
Free Dress Day
Friday 24 March saw us celebrate Harmony Day, with our school leaders organising a gold coin donation free dress day, in which students either wore orange or clothing from their family heritage. Our school raised $1053.00, with the money being donated equally to Story Dogs and the student council who are raising money to purchase a chilled water fountain for the junior covered play area. A big thankyou to everyone who donated.
Playgrounds: Keeping our Children Safe
To assist with keeping all of our students safe, we would like to remind everyone that our playground equipment is not permitted for use before or after school. The equipment requires a teacher on duty to supervise all children for safe play. We appreciate your support with following school procedures and to ensure our children are safe.
Internet Safety Sessions
On Monday 13 March, our P&C arranged for Brett Lee, the founder of “Internet Safe Education” and author of the book “Screen Resolution” to speak to both students and parents to equip and educate our students with the skills and knowledge to use the internet safely, whilst making them aware of their rights and responsibilities in the cyberworld.
The student sessions were very educational and engaging, with students learning how to be cybersafe, while enjoying using the internet. Some of the main messages Brett spoke with the students about included:
- Once you put something on the internet it is there forever
- We need to protect our personal information on the internet
- People you speak to on the internet are strangers unless you know them in real life
- We need to follow the same rules on the internet as we do in real life
- Talk to a trusted known adult if we are having problems on the internet
It was also very pleasing to see so many parents attend the parent session, which was fully booked within 2 days of being advertised. A big thank you to our P&C for funding these sessions.
Student Smart Watches
We have had some queries from parents about whether students are allowed to wear Smart Watches to school. Students are allowed to wear these watches, however, they should be set to school mode from 8:30am through to 3pm, which ensures the following applications are not available during school hours.
- communication (text messages, phone calls, social media)
- internet access
- entertainment (eg. games)
If you need to contact your child throughout the school day, we request you do so via the school office staff. Students who use their Smart Watches to access any of the restrictions listed above during school hours, will receive consequences in line with our school’s Code of Conduct. A big thank you to all parents and carers for ensuring Smart Watches are set to ‘school mode’.
Uniforms
Thank you to all families who ensure students are in full school uniform each day. As the weather will begin to get cooler this term, it is important that all students continue to wear the correct Buderim Mountain State School winter uniform. We are fortunate to have excellent support from our parents in ensuring students are in full school uniform each day. Thank you for continuing this and only wearing the following winter uniform to school:
- Unisex jackets/jumpers – bottle green and maroon double fleece with embroidered logo
- Unisex pullovers – bottle green and maroon double fleece with embroidered logo
- Unisex long pants such as track pants in bottle green or tights under skorts in bottle green
- Additional winter items must be plain bottle green or maroon in colour (including jumpers)
Curriculum Corner
Assessment & Academic Reporting
Our teachers use a variety of assessment tasks to assess students’ progress.
At the start of each school year, teachers have a detailed excel report with their students’ data from the previous school year. It contains levels of achievement and tracking of summative and diagnostic data. Teachers use this data to cater for our students from the first day. It assists them with differentiation and tracking their students’ progress.
There are three types of assessment:
- Summative – assesses our students based on the Australian Curriculum Achievement Standard (A-E with C standard ‘working at level’); also known as ‘assessment of learning’
- Diagnostic – assesses using data to inform teaching, differentiation and track progress (e.g. reading levels); also known as ‘assessment for learning’
- Formative – occurs during lessons and teachers adjust their teaching during the learning process; used to inform lessons and differentiation; also known as ‘assessment as learning’
It is important to keep in mind your child’s overall result for the report card is based on the summative assessment tasks for this semester. While we teach many concepts within each learning area, the semester grade is based on the summative assessment (Australian Curriculum Achievement Standard).
The ‘C’ standard means ‘working at level’. The A/B level assessable elements relate to students applying their skills and knowledge in more complex ways within the same year level content. Each summative task contains assessable elements to enable students the opportunities to demonstrate their abilities within these higher levels.
Please ensure the office has your latest email addresses in the database. These addresses are linked to the emailing of academic report cards, which will be sent to parents at the end of Week 1, Term 3.
Our Yearly Curriculum Overviews are located on the website.
