P&C Day
Our school community has celebrated P&C Day on Friday May 19 by recognising the amazing contribution our P&C makes to our school. We have a terrific P&C Executive who are ably supported by a number of committee members. This group continues to support the P&C business units to thrive (Outside School Hours Care, Uniform Shop and Tuckshop). As a collective, our P&C is highly focussed on making Buderim Mountain State School the best it can be for our whole school community.
Below are just some of the amazing ways our P&C supports our students, teachers and our school community:
- Keeping us safe travelling to and from school with Traffic Safety Videos, Tindale Ave Crossing, Part Smart Program and Bus Route improvements,
- Continuing to improve our facilities and learning with new playgrounds and shade structures, new car park, air-conditioning every classroom, contributing to our new hall, supporting our Performing Arts program and providing new sporting equipment.
- Organising, running and supporting events such as our Mother’s and Father’s Day Stalls, Movie Nights, School Discos, Working Bees, Science Nights, Year 6 Graduation, Internet Safety Presentations, Trivia Night and the ever popular Breakfast Club.
Our Buderim Mountain State School community is very lucky to have such an excellent P&C and we ask you to please join us in saying thank you for all of their hard work!
Farewell
At the end of this term, we say farewell to Ken Bishop who has been our Schools Officer (Grounds & Facilities) for the past 24 years. Ken has done a terrific job for us over this time and has ensured our grounds have been maintained to a very high standard.
We wish Ken all the best in retirement as he enjoys plenty of well-earned sleep ins and fishing time.

Junior Chior Performance - Scone Time
On Tuesday 10 May, our Junior Choir students visited the Buderim War Memorial Hall for their first performance of the year. Martin Duncan, former chef and restaurateur facilitates a wonderful community initiative called Scone Time, which aims to bring the community together in local halls, to indulge in scones and social activities. We were fortunate to be invited along to this event to perform three songs we have been practicing this term. The students thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to showcase their performance skills and sang beautifully to a large audience of delighted community members.
Congratulations to all of our young performers and we look forward to seeing you shine on the stage once again, on Thursday 22 June. Please save the date! We will also be performing at Scone Time again later in the year, so please stay tuned for updates.
Enjoy the photos of our talented students performing at Scone Time!

Instrumental Music Program 2023
The Instrumental Music Band and Strings Programs have had an excellent start to the year with many new string and band musicians starting. It has been wonderful to see how all of the students have settled into a routine of attending lessons, early morning rehearsals and home practice. They have already learned new music and skills and we are very excited to watch their progress.
Parent Open Instrumental Music Band Lessons and String Rehearsals
At the end of last term parents were given the opportunity to sit in on an Instrumental Music beginner band lesson with their child to see what they had been learning as well as attend an open String rehearsal. It was great to see so many parents take the time to be part of this opportunity and become involved in their child’s musical journey.
Overall the Instrumental Music Programs are off to a wonderful start and the students’ enthusiasm and progress of the students are worth celebrating. I am sure the rest of the term will be filled with growth, learning and memorable musical experiences for everyone involved.
Senior & Junior Band Workshops
Exciting news! Last week the Junior Band students attended the Beginner Band Bash while the Senior Band students attended the Super Sharp Seniors Workshop at Brightwater State School. We had budding musicians from 5 schools come together - Buderim Mountain, Brightwater, Buddina, Mountain Creek and Mooloolaba State Schools. Over the 2 days we had 235 students which was fantastic. The workshops were organised to provide students the opportunity to play in a larger ensemble with students of the same level. They also had the privilege to work with other Instrumental Music teachers and a guest conductor from the North Coast Region Alisa Jones (HOD of Conducting and Ensembles).
Students not only had the opportunity to play in a large ensemble but they also participated in fun activities such as chair drumming, the magic carpet and rhythmic Chinese whispers.
Thank-you to the wonderful parent helpers; Katie, Vanessa, Lauren, Andrea, Julie and Liza who gave up their time and day to help. I couldn’t have done it without you.
Thank-you to all parents and families for coming to the concert and supporting Instrumental Music. I am sure you were impressed by what the students had achieved in only one day.
Overall the workshops were a huge success and I am proud of the student’s focus and hard work. I have no doubt that these workshops will encourage and inspire them to continue on their musical journey.

A taste of the Arts Evening
Our talented Arts students at BMSS are looking forward to welcoming parents and our Buderim community on Thursday 22 June 2023, for a casual evening celebrating our creativity.
Students involved with Instrumental Music, the Senior Dance team, Rock bands, Drama Club, Choirs and Art Club will feature on the evening, showcasing some of their songs, performances and artworks. The Library will also be open for parents and carers to view students’ classroom artwork featured throughout the semester.
The P & C will be selling a variety of delicious food from the Banksia Café, once the gates open at 5pm and throughout the evening.
The main performances commence at 5.30 and will run until approximately 7.30 pm, just in time for our young superstar performers to head home, to bed.
Tickets for the event can be purchased online- (at no cost), and one lucky ticket holder will win a prize, courtesy of our generous P & C. We do ask on the evening that a gold coin donation is made at the front gate upon arrival.
Book your tickets here: https://events.humanitix.com/a-taste-of-the-arts.
We can’t wait to welcome you along to this special event, where you’ll receive “A Taste of the Arts” and a look at the exciting work happening in this creative sphere at Buderim Mountain SS!

National Reconciliation Week
National Reconciliation Week is held every year from 27 May to 3 June and is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. If you would like more information on National Reconciliation Week, please look through the attachment.
NAIDOC Week
This year NAIDOC week is Sunday 2 through to 9 July, and the theme is For Our Elders. Across every generation, our Elders have played, and continue to play, an important role and hold a prominent place in our communities and families.
They are cultural knowledge holders, trailblazers, nurturers, advocates, teachers, survivors, leaders, hard workers and our loved ones.
Our loved ones who pick us up in our low moments and celebrate us in our high ones. Who cook us a feed to comfort us and pull us into line, when we need them too.
They guide our generations and pave the way for us to take the paths we can take today. Guidance, not only through generations of advocacy and activism, but in everyday life and how to place ourselves in the world.
We draw strength from their knowledge and experience, in everything from land management, cultural knowledge to justice and human rights. Across multiple sectors like health, education, the arts, politics and everything in between, they have set the many courses we follow.
The struggles of our Elders help to move us forward today. The equality we continue to fight for is found in their fight. Their tenacity and strength has carried the survival of our people.
It is their influence and through their learnings that we must ensure that when it comes to future decision making for our people, there is nothing about us - without us.
We pay our respects to the Elders we’ve lost and to those who continue fighting for us across all our Nations and we pay homage to them.
In 2023, our school will celebrate For Our Elders, through inviting Dion Drummond, from Nexus Arts to work with all students across our school on June 20 and June 21. Dion is of Torres Strait Islander descent on his mother Cindy’s side, and Aboriginal from his late father’s side (Cape York Peninsula).
Dion was born in Mossman (Kuku-Yalangi Tribal area) 80km north of Cairns, Queensland. During his performance he will share tales, language and artefacts from both of his cultures, teaching students about the different traditions of his Torres Strait Island and Aboriginal Indigenous heritage. Students will participate in learning actions of songs and dances, and Dion highlights some important values, such as respect, with humour and energy.
A lively, interactive show which will help our students understand the importance of First Nations Culture and Elders in community.

Children loved watching familiar characters which included The Big Bad Wolf, Little Red Riding Hood, the Gingerbread Man, Goldilocks and the three Bears come to life on the puppet stage. On returning to the classroom children wrote about their experience.
Prep Mother's Day Pampering
The preps had a marvelous time pampering their Mums at our special Mother’s Day event. We treated them to a special sweet treat, played games, dressed up and enjoyed a fun photo booth, gave our Mums massages and made a keepsake bracelet together. It’s great to have a special day each year to dedicate to our Mums and thank them for all they do. We thank all of the Mums in our school community for all of your love and support you give to your children. We hope you all had a great day!

Prep Vision Screening
Good vision is important for a child’s educational, physical and social development. Vision screening checks for common eye conditions that may impact your child’s ability to see and therefore impact their learning and development.
A Registered Nurse will be visiting the school on Monday the 17th of July to Wednesday 19th of July to conduct vision screening for children in their prep year.
If you wish to have your prep child participate in this FREE vision screening program, please complete a consent form online (https://visionscreening.health.qld.gov.au/ParentalConsent/2903LWPs) by Midnight, Thursday 22 June 2023.
Participation in this free vision screening program is not compulsory. If you do not wish for your child to participate in screening, please complete the consent form and indicate that you wish to decline screening.
Parents do not need to be present for screening, however if you would like to be, please contact the school to arrange this.
If you have concerns about your child’s eyes at any time, please take your child to see an eye health professional (optometrist/ophthalmologist).

Life Vac, medical device
The school would like to sincerely thank the Potter family for their kind donation of a Life Vac medical device which is designed to saves lives. It is designed to save the life of a person who is choking. Once this device was brought to the attention of the school, we learnt about this simple to use device and how important it would be to have these available at school. The lifesaving advantages of this device are unmeasurable and so the school has purchased another two for use at school and on excursions. For more information on Life Vac please go to their website.

PERKS Project
Our most recent PERKS lesson in Years 1 to 6 has focussed on Empathy.
The lesson explored the following:
What is Empathy?
Putting ourselves in other’s shoes to try to understand how they are thinking or feeling – See our poster
Empathy is not…
It’s not what you would do – it’s all about the other person. It is not feeling sorry for the other person or trying to fix things for them.
Why is Empathy important?
It helps us to be understanding and supportive and be a better friend
How do we show Empathy?
- Look out for feeling clues – facial expressions, body language, voice tone.
- Be a good listener
- Be supportive and do something helpful.
- Let people know you care.
The POWER of Empathy!!!!
When we put ourselves in someone else’s shoes we are able to:
- See through someone else’s eyes
- Listen through someone else’s ears
- Feel through someone else’s heart
Students were also able to try some practical examples of using empathy…….
Visit the PERKS section in our school library to check out the great picture books on Empathy to share at home.
Year 6 House Reader's Cup
A group of Year 6 students from each house read a selection of five books over a ten-week time frame. The students met once a week and worked collaboratively to study the books and question each other about characters and events.
On the day there were five rounds and ten questions on each book similar to a trivia competition. Students quietly discussed questions as a group and tried to come up with the best answer. The winning team was Iterra who won by only half a point. Thank you to our judge Mrs Williams and well done to all of the students for the time and effort they put into working with their teams.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
Please ensure the office has your latest email addresses in the database. These addresses are linked to the emailing of academic report cards, which will be sent to parents Friday Week 1, Term 3.

Thankyou for working with us and applying these credits to your accounts- your support and co-operation is greatly appreciated.
Over the next few weeks, those families who still have credit on their accounts will receive an email from the Finance team, with a request to either:

Uniform Shop News
Autumn has well and truly arrived, bringing some fresh morning air and chilly winds, and Winter is literally around the corner! Thankfully, our uniform shop is ready to warm your children, with winter jackets in stock, as well as long-sleeved polos, track pants and tights. You can even save some $$$ if you get in quick for the Winter Clearance Rack. Check out the sale rack during uniform shop hours, or on Flexischools in the ‘Winter Items’ section. Our second-hand racks are also full of options so please come and browse.
Please note that uniform shop hours have changed slightly. Monday remains the same, with the shop open from 8:15am – 10am. On Thursdays, the opening time and finish time are moving back 15 minutes, so instead of opening at 2pm the shop will now open at 2:15pm, and instead of closing at 3:15pm the shop will now stay open until 3:30pm.
We have also recently introduced the new BMSS Bucket Hat. These hats were hotly requested by parents and kids alike! Just $20 each, the bucket hats are great quality with an adjustable crown. Available in S, M, L & XL sizes. Don’t love the new style? No problem - our Broad-brimmed hats are still available, including our soft, Crushable Hat and standard Slouch Hat.
The new bucket hat will eventually replace the Slouch hat, but the Crushables are not going anywhere! In fact, Slouch hats are now $15, so it’s a great opportunity to pick up a spare.
To purchase the new Bucket Hat and all uniform items, you can:
- Order via Flexischools for delivery direct to your child in their classroom
- Visit the Uniform Shop during opening hours on Mondays 8:15am-10am and Thursdays 2:15pm- 3:30pm
If you have any questions or queries, feel free to email Belinda at: uniform@bmsspandc.org or phone 0754772791

The service will provide a light morning tea and afternoon tea, but children are required to bring a packed lunch (preferably nut free due to allergies within the service). Although there are water fountains available, children are encouraged to bring a drink bottle to stay hydrated.
Excursions
From past experience, we recommend booking in at your earliest convenience to avoid disappointment (due to capped numbers and waitlists).
