2023 School Review
Throughout Term 2 2023, our school undertook its school led review. Our school was asked to be part of this trial, as an acknowledgement of the wonderful work our teachers do each and every day to support the learning of our students. Our review report has been validated by a team of Reviewers by the Education Department as part of its commitment to review all schools at least once every four years. All of the information identified within our report will be used to inform our future Strategic Plan (2024-2027). Once we have the formal copy of the Validation Report, and our Strategic Plan is complete, they will be uploaded to our School Website and included in our Newsletter.
We would like to thank all families who completed surveys throughout Semester 2, 2022 and for those families who emailed ideas in to our school during Term 2. Your suggestions were greatly appreciated, and together with the ideas from staff and students helped determine what we are doing well and shape our recommendations for improvement.
2024 Prep Enrolments - Closing 15 September
Please be aware that Prep enrolments are closing on the last day of term three, September 15. We thank all families who have handed in their enrolments as this assists the school to plan for 2024. If you know of families in our community with young ones please let them know about the closing date. Prep tours will continue each Monday until the end of October. Bookings are essential and can be made through the office.
Prep Science Street Incursion
On Tuesday the 8th of August, Prep classes had our Street Science Incursion. All classes went to a 30 Minute Science Show in the hall and then went back later in the day for a hands on investigation session where they made instant snow!
Here are some sentences from Prep LF children about the incursion:
Bambi – “I loved the feeling of the snow”.
Cassidy – “It was so fun and the snow was SO soft”.
Miles – “I loved watching the dry ice make a cloud, it felt cold”.
Hamish – “ I liked the snow because I’ve never ever seen snow”.
Tate – “I liked watching the powder get bigger and turn into snow”.
Year 1 Fire Safety Incursion
This term, Year 1 have been lucky enough to have had two visits from our local fire brigade. We learned all about the importance of fire safety, practiced ‘get down low and go, go, go!’, explored the important equipment within a fire engine, learnt that once out of fire we need to stay out and even got to have a go using the fire hose to put out a pretend fire! A big thankyou to Bruce, Cam, Mark and James for taking the time to visit us!
Year 1 challenge all of our families to do the following:
- Count how many fire alarms are in your house
- Test your fire alarms to check if they work
- Learn your home address
- Learn your parent/carers phone number
- Come up with and practise a fire escape plan with your family
Year 1 Wildlife HQ Excursion
On Monday the 14th August, 1B, 1F and the year 1's from 1/2H took the bus to visit Wildlife HQ. The students visited the different animal enclosures and observed natural, managed and constructed environments. We also had a zoo keeper chat, and we even got to pat a Python and a Koala. It was a fantastic day!
My favourite part about our Zoo visit was:
Mila - The Red Panda was very cute.
Olive - I liked seeing all the different Monkeys.
Rose - My favourite part was seeing the Koalas, watching them eat the leaves and getting to pat one.
Meridian - I loved the reptile house which we visited twice.
What was your favourite animal?
Tom - Dingo
Jai - Emperor Tamarin
Darius - Sun Bear
James - White Cheek Gibbon
Year 2 Sea Life Excursion
The Year 2 classes were very fortunate to visit Sea Life to link in with their learning about how to write information reports all about animals for their English unit. The day was filled with an exciting bus ride, a chance to touch sea cucumbers and sea stars in the touch pool, lunch during the seal show and a guided tour through the exhibits; learning all about the wide array of marine life.
We learnt a lot and some stand out facts from the day were:
- Jelly Fish are actually called Sea Jellies as fish have gills and brains – but Sea Jellies do not!
- Turtles have spikes in their throats.
- Turtles can’t vomit or release gas so when they swallow plastic from the waterways, they float to the top of the water and are unable to catch food. This was a good reminder to make sure our rubbish ends up in the correct bins.
- How to tell the difference between male and female sharks.
- The colours on a penguin protect them from predators. Their backs are blue so they look like water from above, and their tummies are white so they look like sea foam and clouds from below.
- Male seahorses give birth to their babies – instead of female seahorses. They birth up to 200 babies!
- The seahorses at Sea Life cost the most money to keep. It costs $600 each week to get special food all the way from Melbourne for them.
What a fun day!
From the students in 2BR 😊
Nexus incursion - Wala The spirit of Ghana
On Monday the 24th of July we were lucky enough to have some amazing African performers come to BMSS! They were representing the Ghanian culture and their band was called ‘Wala’. They performed some entertaining dances and songs with their 15 handmade drums, flutes, and other instruments. The largest drum had a lion carved into it, to show a story within their culture. They also had beautiful costumes which were eye-catching.
They spoke about a traditional instrument called ‘Aslatua’ which is dried Swawa Gourds filled with pebbles that form round rattles attached by a single string. They held it between their fingers and with a flick of the wrist the two hollow balls cracked together to make music. They talked about how they were the original ‘video games’ of African culture. We learnt about the levels of difficulty to use the instrument to make music. Near the end the performers encouraged all the teachers to join in on stage and do a dance. Most children were lucky enough to go up on stage and experience their music and dance. Their enthusiasm was contagious.
Written by Finn, Primrose and Xanthe.
Chappy Week
We celebrated Chappy week in 3 of this term, and it was a great way to highlight and cheer others on. A huge thank you to all those people for supporting the Chappy Fundraising breakfast. It was truly wonderful to see everyone come together to support the program and I definitely feel a part of the team here.
In the weeks leading up to Chappy Week, I encouraged the student leaders to be involved in supporting and running games for the students across different year levels. I saw many of the students rise above and beyond my expectations. The preps and year 1 students had a blast with the parachute games and musical hoops. School leaders were very responsible, eager to help and well organised. On reflection I can see it was a valuable experience for them giving of their own time to make someone’s day. Some new games we have been playing recently are Chuck the Chook and Gaga Ball. During these times, we are connecting and building connections as well as showing students different ways to engage with each other through play.
Scavenger Hunts were organised for all year levels throughout Chappy Week and were a big hit. Students worked in teams and moved all over the school for clues. The golden tickets for the younger grades provided some curiosity, excitement and JOY when they found one.
At a recent seminar by Justin Coulson (Keynote speaker and author ) I was challenged to encourage students to help others. When students are out and involved with helping others it keeps them active and outward looking. Recently the 'Tin Drive' gave opportunity for ways to support others in our community and I know this was a reminder no matter how small, we can all do something to help others.
What drives me as a Chappy:
My drive primarily comes from one particular highlight, when as a parent, and my 25 year old daughter said ‘thank you for being the champion cheerleader of my dreams’. Wow I thought, Isn’t that what we all long to have? A champion, the sound of someone significant in our corner cheering us on. This is what Chaplaincy is. Chaplaincy offers endless opportunities everyday I’m at school to cheer on the children, their families, the staff, the processes of the Buderim school community.
Thank you to everyone for your ongoing support. It was truly overwhelming to receive so many class cards during Chappy Week and to be celebrated with love. Thank you and have a great week everyone.

Representative Sport
Buderim Mountain State School is part of the Nambour Sporting District as the first level of representative sport for students attending sporting trials. If selected in the Nambour District Team, students then compete for selection in the Sunshine Coast Regional Team. Throughout this term we have had many students compete at both levels.
District Athletics
Last Thursday we went to District Athletics at the university track where all the events were held. When we got to the track there was already a Buderim tent set up for us to stay under while we were waiting for our events.
The first event of the day was the 200m heats and a few of us got into the finals as well as the 100m and the 800m. We were very lucky to have Mrs Dalton with us, because she kept track of what time we needed to go to our events, and she was very encouraging to us all. During the day we got many first places such as Ellie E got first in her shot put, Olivia D got first in her 800m final, Xavier P got first in his shot-put event, Mia F got first in her discus and shot put and Will O got first in his 100, 200 and 800m final along with Beau B coming a close second. Isabelle R got second in long jump along with Henry R who also received a first ribbon in High Jump. Harley O also came first in his 800m final, Flynn D and Atreyu came first and second respectively in their 800m final and so all these amazing athletes that got first and second place in their events are heading off to regionals at the end of the month.
We got back to school on the bus, and we were all happy with the results we got. I would like to say a massive thank you to Mr Hawes and Mrs Dalton for what an amazing effort they put in to getting it to run smoothly.

Year 3 Cosmodome Incursion
As part of our Science Unit ‘Night and Day’, all of the Year 3 children had the opportunity to visit the Cosmodome, an igloo-shaped dome providing full-dome shows with imagery surrounding the viewer. It was a fantastic addition to our Science Curriculum, providing a learning opportunity with a difference. Teachers and students alike really enjoyed their Cosmodome experience.
An insight into our Cosmodome experience by some of our year 3B students:
We in 3B were very excited about the Cosmodome. We learnt about the Sun, the Earth and the Moon. We learnt that the earth moves, not the sun and we learnt about constellations. Some people think the sun is very close because you can see it, but actually it is far, far away.
- Did you know in the olden days when there was no electricity, people had to use a stick in the ground to tell the time?
- Did you know Jupiter has three big, red dots on it its surface?
- Did you know that different galaxies have different planets?
- People think that Mars will become inhabited by humans one day.
We enjoyed this incursion a lot!
Sophia R and Nela 3B
We were very excited when we saw the Cosmodome in the hall. The entrance was very unusual because we had to climb through the soft walls of the dome. With the pictures and videos all around us, everyone was amazed. There were funny clips of a dingo who had misconceptions about Science and the earth. Scientists then showed us the facts about these ideas.
We learnt that the sun is not moving, the earth is. We also learned that the sun is a medium star and that other stars are bigger, but further away. To us, the presentation looked 3D.
We found out that in the olden days, people used a stick to tell the time. It was called a shadow stick.
Did you know that the moon orbits around our earth?
When we left the Cosmodome, we had jelly legs!
We hope you can go to the Cosmodome one day!
Duncan and Tilly 3B
When we first walked into the Cosmodome, it was very dark. Our voices echoed and sounded different. The whole dome was very bouncy. It was inflated and looked like a sphere.
We learned about the equator and the earth’s axis.
The presentation was very interesting. It helped us see the world because astronauts took photos for us to see.
We learnt a lot about the earth, the Milky Way, other galaxies, compass points and the planets.
It was a really fun incursion.
Sinead and Spencer 3B
Student Free Day
Please be aware that Friday 1 September (end of Week 8) is a student free day in all public schools across Queensland. As a result, our school will be closed to students on this day. Our Outside School Hours Care program will be open all day as per Vacation Care hours.
2024 Classes
At the start of next term, we will begin the process of developing class lists for 2024. This process is always predicted for the beginning of the school year and confirmed on the eighth day of the new school year. At Buderim Mountain State School, we have a very detailed process, which takes place over a number of weeks to create classes. This includes use of a software program to assist with the creation of classes based on gender, academics and appropriate learning partners.
If parents have any specific requests regarding their child’s placement for 2024, please send an email to our administration staff by Friday 15 September to info@buderimmountainss.eq.edu.au. Please be aware of the following:
- Parents are not able to request a specific teacher for their child.
- Please do not submit any requests for your child to be placed with another child, as all children will do this at school, by choosing up to 5 learning partners they would like to be in a class with – we do guarantee that they will be placed with at least 1 of the learning partners they have requested.
- Generally, the request needs to identify characteristics or concerns relating to your child which you feel need to be taken into consideration in regards to class placement.
- Students will be informed of their provisional 2023 class in the final week of the school year (Wednesday 6 December) via an email to parents.
- While all requests are given due consideration, please be aware that it is not always possible to guarantee these requests.
- We are unable to consider any requests submitted after the due date (end of Term 3).
QParents
Our school has been using QParents in recent years for all year levels. If you have not already signed up with an account, all unregistered parents of P-6 students should receive an invitation email at various points of the year to invite you to sign up. QParents is a simple way to pay for any school excursions or fees without having to send money or paperwork back to the school. Parents can also gain an update on their child’s attendance and submit absence information. Finally, parents can update personal details automatically and students’ past report cards can be accessed via QParents. If you have not received an invitation, please advise us immediately.
Instrumental Music
Start your child’s musical journey with the Instrumental Music Program in 2024.
The Instrumental Music Program offers an incredible opportunity for students in Year 3, 4, 5 or 6 to learn a musical instrument through the school and to participate in the school String Ensemble and Concert Bands.
If your child is interested in learning a String, Brass, Woodwind or Percussion instrument in 2024, please click on the link below to complete the Instrumental Music Expression of Interest Survey by Wednesday 23rd August, 2023.

In Week 4 our PERKS lesson for Years 1 to 6 focussed on COURAGE & VULNERABILITY.
We covered the following in the lesson:
# What is Vulnerability?
- being completely open and honest about our thoughts and feelings.
- The uncomfortable feeling we get when we step out of our comfort zone and don’t know exactly how things will work out.
- Is a sign that we are STRONG not weak.
# What is Courage?
- doing things that are hard for us even though we feel uncomfortable.
- looks brave from the outside but on the inside can feel worrying or uncertain.
- is an emotion that always partners with fear.
#Types of Courage
Physical Courage, Social Courage, Moral Courage, Emotional Courage, Intellectual Courage
# How can we show COURAGE?
- Talking about how we feel
- Asking for what we need
- Being ourselves
- Being kind to others who are trying to be themselves
- Learning how to be brave and afraid at the same time
# Examples of Everyday Courage
- Making new friends
- Giving yourself permission to fail
- Speaking in public
- Doing something on your own for the first time
- Doing the right thing even if no one else is
- Standing up for someone who is being picked on
- Standing up for yourself
- Admitting that you are wrong
- Asking for help
Mrs Brennan shared a great book from our school library called “The Koala Who Could” by author Rachel Bright which illustrated the notion of being vulnerable and showing courage. The same author has written another lovely book “The Lion Inside” addressing the same topic. You may wish to borrow these from our PERKS Corner in the library to read with your children at home.
Don’t forget to visit our PERKS couch in the library to see other great books that address student wellbeing.
Please remember that we have created five different PERKS vignettes to support our PERKS Project. The link to these can be found on the school website – click on Social Emotional Learning PERKS Project and you will see the links on the right hand side. Topics are: Five cups for happiness; The Three Brains; Dolphins, Jellyfish, Sharks; Resilience and Mindset. Alternatively, you can google BMSS on You Tube and you will find the vignettes.
Free Dress Day
Friday the 18th August is a free dress day support Bullying No Way Day, with students wearing Orange to support this cause.
Friday the 14th September will be a free dress day to support R U OK day.
Our school leaders will collect a gold coin donation for all students participating. The money being donated will be equally shared between the student council who are raising money to purchase a chilled water fountain for the junior covered play area, and the Bullying No Way Day/ RU OK Day foundation.
Playgrounds: Keeping our children safe
To assist with keeping all of our students safe, we would like to remind everyone that our playground equipment is not permitted for use before or after school. The equipment requires a teacher on duty to supervise all children for safe play. We appreciate your support with following school procedures and to ensure our children are safe.
In addition to keeping our children safe we ask all parents to ensure they close all school gates when they enter or leave the school grounds.
Curriculum Corner
Mathematics: Open-Ended Questions
At BMSS, our pedagogy is aligned with the ‘Elements of an Effective Mathematics Lesson’. This framework was developed by The Department of Education North Coast Region in consultation with experts in Mathematics. While our mathematics lessons focus on the proficiencies of understanding and fluency, we also focus on the proficiencies of problem solving and reasoning. Open-ended questions are a key part of this learning.
What are open-ended questions?
- They require more than remembering a fact or reproducing a skill.
- Students can learn by answering the questions, and the teacher learns about each student from the attempt.
- There may be several acceptable answers.
Below is an example of a closed question:
- 12 X 5 = 60
Below are two different ways the same question can be ‘open-ended’:
- How many multiplication number sentences can you make = 60?
- How many vehicles do we need to transport 60 people to the pool? Why this many? (justify/prove/explain)
Here are some examples of open-ended questions you might like to use at home.
Year Levels | Questions/Tasks | Teacher/Parent Info |
Lower
| ?+?+?=15 What might the missing numbers be? (This question can also be used for older students – they might use numbers with decimals to equal 15) | The purpose of this question is for students to think about the addition process in a different way and to show that there can be a range of possible answers to a given problem |
Middle
| At a party, the lollies were shared. Each person got 3. How many people were at the party and how many lollies were there altogether? | Note how students complete this task. Do they realise that they only have to multiply 3 by any number of people to find the total number of lollies at the party? E.g. 3 lollies x 9 people = 27 lollies |
Upper
| What could you add to 361 to make it divisible by 10? | Adding 9 is the obvious answer, but there are many other possible solutions. Can students find a rule or pattern for this one? |
Our Yearly Curriculum Overviews are located on the website.

QParents Frequently Asked Questions
How much do I owe?
- QParents enables you to view invoices as well as details of paid invoices. Click the ‘To Pay’ checkbox next to any invoice to make a payment.
- Note: If you are viewing the payment screen within the combined student view (accessed through the Payments tile on your home screen), click on the student name which will navigate you to the individual student profile where you can make a payment.
- Watch this videofor an overview of the payments screen and making online payments in QParents.
If I pay an invoice does that mean my child can attend the event?
- You will also need to give your ‘consent’ (permission) for your child to attend. In the past, we have sent out permission letters however we now use QParents to gain your consent. It is important that you provide consent (your permission for your child to attend the event) as well as pay for the invoice.
I notice QParents has ‘Consent Management’. What is this?
- Consent Management is a new feature in QParents. It enables you to provide consent (permission) for events/excursions. This is a great feature as it removes the paperwork previously required for every school event your child would attend (please note, you still need to pay for the event as well as give your consent- two part process).
School Student Broadband Initiative – Australian Government
To boost educational opportunities and narrow the digital divide, families without home internet are encouraged to apply for the School Student Broadband Initiative (SSBI). Access to internet at home can support children to build their digital skills and participate in a world that is more reliant on digital technology.
The Australian Government is supporting the National Broadband Network (NBN) to implement the SSBI to provide free home internet for one year for up to 30,000 unconnected families across Australia with school aged students.
To be eligible for SSBI, a family must:
- Have a child living at home that is enrolled in a Queensland state school in 2023.
- Not have an active internet service at home. Having a mobile internet service does not affect eligibility.
- Be referred by a nominating organisation such as the Department of Education (the department).
- Agree their child has access to a device and has the digital skills to use the internet safely or will be supervised.
- Live in a premises that can access the NBN via a standard connection – this will be checked by NBN.
Referral through the Department
The Department is pleased to support the nomination of families for the SSBI. If you would like to apply for the SSBI please use the link or QR code above OR contact 54772777 for an application (online or paper form) and further information about the initiative. Applications must be submitted by 8 September 2023.

This event is a service provided to our school community to help us thank all the dads, heroes, father-figures and role models our children are blessed to have in their lives.
We’ll be releasing a full catalogue of items on our social media platforms prior to the stall so you can help your child plan and budget for the day. Please note that popular items often sell out quick, so to be sure you get your favourite items consider visiting the stall before school. We will need an army of helpers to assist, so please email Margie if you can pop in for an hour or two to help sell items on the day. We’ll have shifts every hour from 7:45am – 2:45pm.
Thank you, and see you there!

Limited sizes, now reduced to $20 each. Please pop into the shop or email uniform@bmsspandc.org to enquire.
Repairs – reminder we have plenty of recycled buttons for school polo shirts available in the Uniform Shop (at no charge) for repairs. If you need some, please pop into the shop, or email and we can send a few home with your student. Replacement chinstraps for crushable hats are also available for purchase.
Flexischools App – there is currently a known issue within the app, where the ‘Shop’ option may not be visible when first opened. If you experience this, please close the app down and restart – this should resolve. Flexischools’ developers are working on a fix. This program aims to support the development of autonomy and promote independence. Run in an outdoor environment, it provides opportunities for self-discovery and child-directed learning through excursions, with destinations varying each fortnight and taking place within the Buderim community. It means senior students can explore their community, develop independence and expand life skills.

Tom Rickard’s Park
A huge thanks to our valued team at OSHC for continually working to help children of all ages grow and develop within the OSHC service and its many wonderful programs.
