End of Year
Term 4 Calendar
Farewell and Welcome
At the end of this school year, we say farewell to two staff who are retiring. Mrs Greiner will be retiring after approximately 40 years of service to the Queensland public education system. Anne began teaching in 1977 and has worked across several schools during her career. We have been fortunate to have her at our school for the past 7 years. Anne was instrumental in the design, development and implementation of our school PERKS project, which is supporting all of our students with their emotional intelligence and resilience. Anne’s friendly face and daily interactions with her year 2 and 3 students will be sadly missed, however, we are all excited for Anne and wish her the very best for her retirement.
We also say farewell to Rosemary Cook. Rosemary started working at our wonderful school as a Teacher Aide in 1999. Rosemary then secured a position working in our front office in 2003. We have been fortunate to have Rosemary as the welcoming face of our school for 20 years. Rosemary’s friendly, welcoming smile will be sadly missed from our front office. We thank Rosemary for her contribution to the Buderim Mountain State School community and wish her many happy travels in her retirement.
In 2024, we welcome the following staff members to our school:
Tonia Farrell | Hambledon State School |
Maddison Sapir | Townview State School |
Lara Straughair | Lockhart State School |
Sharon Mackie | Emerald State School & Landsborough State School |
Anne Goodman | Deputy Principal Year 2 and 3 |
I’m sure our Buderim community will join me in welcoming our new staff members in 2024.

Road Safety
To help keep our school community safe, all parents and students are reminded to please use the crossings provided when crossing the road.
Tuckshop Day
Tuckshop Day was celebrated last week as we shared a big thank you for everyone who assists with making sure our tuckshop runs so well. Fiona and her team do an amazing job and we are very thankful for this. Once again this year, our classes passed on cards and messages of appreciation to our wonderful tuckshop staff.
Volunteer Morning Tea
We are very fortunate at Buderim Mountain State School to have literally hundreds of volunteers who assist with the ongoing successful operation of our wonderful school. From assisting in the classroom and at P&C events to helping in the tuckshop, working bees, story dogs and Walk to School Safely program (to name a few), we appreciate the assistance of our volunteers. Thank you to all volunteers who have helped throughout the 2023 year. Your assistance is certainly appreciated. Thank you, all of our volunteers, and we would like to invite you all to our Volunteer morning tea on Wednesday the 29th November at 9 am. We would also like to thank our P&C for organising this event.
Year 6 Graduation & Farewell
Wednesday 6 December will see our Year 6 students graduate in preparation for the important transition to secondary school. The ceremony will begin at 9:30am and conclude at 11:00am at the Calvary Performance Centre. There will be a number of speeches as well as the announcement of our Year 6 annual awards. All Year 6 students will also receive their graduation certificate. This year, we have approximately 180 Year 6 students graduating and we would like to thank each of them for their significant contribution to our school and wish them all well in their future endeavors. A big thank you to our staff members, parents and P&C members who have been involved in preparing for the ceremony, which I am sure will be an enjoyable morning for all attendees. After the Graduation Ceremony concludes, there will be a complimentary morning tea provided for all students and guests who attend. A very big thank you to our P & C for arranging the catering for this special event.
Swimming Carnivals
Our dedicated PE teachers are putting the finishing touches on the planned swimming carnival for years 3 – 6 to be held in week 9 of this term. Thursday 30 November sees our year 3 and 4 students participate, and our years 5 and 6 students participating on Friday 1 December. It is pleasing to see so many students excited to participate in the planned events of freestyle, backstroke, breast stroke and the individual medley. Students are reminded to bring hats and sunscreen for their carnival, and parents are very welcome to attend.
Final results and age champions will be included in the first newsletter in 2024. Please be aware that the times collected from each student will be compared against qualifying times for the District Swimming Trials. Students will be notified if they will be representing Buderim Mountain State School at the Nambour District Swimming Trials early in 2024. A maximum of two students for each swimming style and distance per age group will be selected. If your child participates in a squad and would like to submit 100m, 200m and 400m times for various strokes, they might have a chance to participate at the district and regional trial. Mr Hawes would like them emailed to him on ahawe5@eq.edu.au as soon as possible.
Arts Extravaganza
The Arts Extravaganza ‘A Journey Through Time’ was a resounding success for 2023 and it is all thanks to you, our dedicated Performing Arts students, P&C, Staff and the community who all came together to make this event a celebration of creativity, talent and inspiration!
This year the Arts Extravaganza was an exciting mix of performances, ranging from musical performances, dramatic theatre works, dancing, rock and an extraordinary finale.
Mr Jackson, Ms Payne, Mr Scullett-Dean, Ms Croxton and Ms McConnel would like to extend their sincere thanks to all students involved who shared their talents and passion. Your dedication and hard work brought joy and inspiration to all who attended.
A special thanks goes out to our generous P & C, Marketing and Executive Committee. Your support allowed us to elevate our Arts Extravaganza to a beautiful venue and made it an even more unforgettable experience.
Thank-you to the Leadership team, volunteers and assistants for your unwavering support which allowed us to create this wonderful opportunity for our talented Performing Arts students. We couldn’t have done it without you.
As we reflect on the success of this year’s Arts Extravaganza, we look forward to performing in our new school Hall next year.
SHEP (State Honours Ensemble Program)
Congratulations to our talented musicians who were selected for the State Honours Ensemble Program (SHEP) at Maryborough:
Archie Rady (Viola)
Oscar Rady (Percussion)
Neiva Reid (Cello)
George Rigby (Trumpet)
Heidi Van Ruth (Violin)
They represented our school admirably and we are very proud of their commitment, achievements, and attitude. We were pleased to see how much they accomplished in such a short time and we heard the concert was amazing. We look forward to seeing their growth in the coming years.
We would also like to congratulate Archie Rady (Viola) and Aaliyah Truasheim (Viola) who have been selected to participate in the State Honours Ensemble Program (SHEP) at Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University in Brisbane this month. This will no doubt extend and encourage their pursuit of musical excellence and we wish them all the very best.
Keep an eye out for more exciting achievements from our talented Instrumental music students in the future.
Remembrance Day
Buderim Mountain State School students will again be part of the Buderim Remembrance Day ceremony this year. The ceremony will be held in the Foote Sanctuary. The choir will assist with the National Anthem and a rendition of ‘Waltzing Matilda’ as well as our School Captains reciting ‘We Shall Keep the Faith’. A big thank to all students who will be representing our school, our parents for your support as well as Mr Jackson and Mrs McConnel for preparing our students and for their planned assistance on the day.
2024 Bookpack drop off
Please be aware that all families will have the opportunity to deliver their child’s 2024 book pack to their 2024 classroom on Friday 19 January from 9:00am -10:00am. Families are welcome to bring book packs on the first day of the school year, but this opportunity has also been provided. Prep classes will continue with the ‘Meet the Teacher’ sessions, also on the 19 January from 9:00am -10:00am, which has occurred in previous years.
Moving Rooms
Please be aware that a number of our teachers are moving to different classrooms for the 2024 school year. To provide enough time for this to occur, the moving process will begin on 1 December and will continue until 8 December for some teachers. If your child’s teacher is moving classroom for 2024, it may mean that your child will finish the school year in a different room. Your child’s teacher will let you know if this is relevant for their class.
Grandparents' Day
Prep LF loved having our Grandparents visit us for Grandparents' Day. We showed our Grandparents around our classroom, which had some of our best work on display! Then we played together and created badges, necklaces and other wonderful art. We showed off our coding skills as we taught our Grandparents how to use Mouse Bots. It was a beautiful morning with lots of memories made.
On Grandparents day I played magnetics and we built a castle. It was the best day ever! William Prep S
I made flowers with my Nan and Pop. I did a painting of a flower. Matilda Prep S
We had fun activities on Grandparents day we made for our Nan and Pop. Carter Prep S.
First Lego League - Circuit Crew Report
On Saturday (Nov 4th) 9 students headed off to Suncoast Christian College in Woombye to take part in the Woombye First Lego League Regional tournament. The students have put in a couple of months of hard work with both their robot Arty (design and coding) and their Innovation Project which is an app that users could use to manipulate music during live performances. We have had some help along the way with the students talking with experts including Ingrid Martin (conductor), Alex Mer Enkov (app developer) and some Buderim Mountain parents, including – Andrew Wilson (musician), Steve Gray (musical equipment salesperson/technician) and Sonia Tucker (audiologist). They have also had help from other teams including Chancellor State College’s RoboKings and RoboRoos from South Australia and Potential Energy, a high school team from Minneapolis in the USA.
The students were nervous to start the day. They had three table runs (2 and a half minutes to complete as many missions as possible) and their project presentation. They were confident with their project idea and were hoping we would get the award for that. They were also hoping to get the award for the best Rookie Team. However, they shocked themselves and the rest of us by winning the whole competition against 14 other teams.
The reward is a trip to the Northern Nationals in Gladstone (Nov 25th). It has been a great experience so far, but we have a few more weeks to go yet.
A huge thanks to those parents I mentioned above for helping out and to Mrs. Eisenmenger, Mrs. Croxton, Ms. Peall, Ms. O’Keefe, Jane Ferguson and Amanda/Ruby Ballinger for assisting in the development of our team.
Gladstone – here they come.

Year 5 Street Science Incursion
This term in science, we are learning about the 3 states of matter (solids, liquids and gases). We have learnt about the properties and if you change the temperature of a solid, liquid or a gas, it will change its state of matter. We learnt that if you change one of the states of matter by freezing or melting it causes condensation or evaporation.
All of the grade 5 classes were lucky enough to visit the Street Science Incursion last week. We all experienced remarkable and exciting science experiments. One of the experiments included using liquid nitrogen. Liquid nitrogen is -169 degrees Celsius. Tasmin, our awesome science instructor, dipped a teaspoon into the bowl filled with liquid nitrogen and in less than one second the spoon came out frozen! Some students got to go up on stage to smell, touch and taste the nitrogen. It was just like the air we breathe. Did you know 78% of Earth’s atmosphere is made up of nitrogen and only 21% oxygen?
After Tasmin finished her amazing show, all of the grade 5 students were able to conduct their own experiments. We all made slime. We collected some coloured PVA mixture, along with cornflower and then we were sent to a table and started to mix it all together. Lastly, we placed 10ml of activating agent into our mix and suddenly it made slime. Tasmin asked us if it was a solid, liquid, or a gas? We had to conduct tests on the slime to work out the state of matter. Tasmin told us it was a non-Newtonian fluid, displaying properties of a solid and a liquid. We also got to make fake snow. We loved the experiments! We are all extremely grateful for Tasmin teaching us and making it so much fun!

Moses Mbye Rugby League Gala Day
On the 27th of October, Buderim Mountain entered four sides, 41 players, into the 2023 Moses Mbye Gala Day. This is a rugby league carnival run by the NRL development officers to maximise participation for children from grades 3 and 4.
The Region was broken into North and South. We attended the South Coast date at Nirimbah Sporting Complex. The day was excellent in terms of organisation, participation and results. We avoided the rain but did have some strong breezes.
Between our four teams – Year 4 Experienced – Year 4 Non-experienced –Year 3 Non-experienced (2 teams) – we played 12 games in total. It is always nice to go away with some positive results. Between the teams we had 8 wins, 6 losses and 2 draws. The day is really about participation (not results) and you can see the games were generally tight and played in a great spirit.
Thank you to Mr Neighbour and Mr Wright for your coaching and good work on the day. We were joined on the day by Mrs Hooper, my current footy mad prac teacher, who took a side as well.
We are looking forward to next year when we will enter again and more students will get to experience playing rugby league – the greatest game of all!

Waste 2 Resource - Year 4 Incursion
Did you know that:
- only glass jars and bottles that contain a liquid or food can be recycled?
- recycled packages that are put in plastic bags end up in landfill?
- soft plastics such as bread bags and the plastic your toilet rolls come in are recycled but we need to take them to supermarkets to be recycled through REDcycle and not in our yellow lid bin?
- it takes 50 years for a take away coffee cup to break down and it CAN NOT go in the recycling bin!
These were all valuable tips the Year 4 students learnt during a workshop presented by the Sunshine Coast Council called Ready Steady Recycle on Wednesday 19 October. As part of the HASS unit this Semester on using the Earth’s resources sustainably, students have now learnt the rules for recycling. They are on their way to becoming better recyclers and know how to close the loop on a material’s life cycle.
In addition, students also learnt:
- how to save the planet and valuable recyclable resources
- the rules for recycling
- how to conserve nature's finite resources and close the loop on a material’s life cycle
A virtual tour of the local Material Recovery Facility, better known as MRF, revealed where recyclables go, how they are sorted and what they are turned into.
So look out parents, there are some motivated sustainability warriors in our community to help us all to REDUCE, REUSE, REPLACE, REPURPOSE AND RECYCLE!

Year 6 Surfing
Our Term 4 Surfing program has started again for our Year 6 surfers. Over the last couple of weeks, the sessions have been held in the calmer waters of Mooloolaba – just south of the surf club with Mother Nature also producing fantastic weather and waves for the students.
This term’s sessions wind up on Friday (November 17th). Surfing will be offered again in Term 1, 2024 for Year 6 students so keep an eye out early next year for the permission slips.
A big shout out to the Maroochy Surf School who provide the students with their boards, rash shirts and plenty of expertise about surfing and how to read the conditions. Also, a big thanks to the parents who get their children up and down to the beach for the early starts.
Mr J and Mr Allan
Science Incursion - Year 1
Last week we enjoyed a science show learning all about light and sound. It was a great experience for all to extend our learning and consolidate our understanding about sources of light and sounds are made and changed.
I learnt that dogs can’t see green grass. Green and red and blue light makes white light!! I also learnt that I can’t see ultra-violet light. – Trey
I learnt that the faster the vibrations, the higher the sound is. I loved the special glasses because if you look into them everything looks rainbow. – Sandra
I loved when Mrs Powell was cutting the straw and the sound went higher and higher. Also when the slinky and the cup made a shooting sound like star wars. Also I liked the bracelet because it changed colour. – Jayden
I learnt about light and sound. My favourite bit about light was when we got to make bead bracelets and looked through the special glasses. My favourite bit about sound was when she got a tube and spun it. It made a high sound when she spun it really fast. – Airlie
I loved when she said dogs can’t see green. I was so surprised about that because my dogs are loved but I had no idea that they can’t see green! It was fascinating that she said that. – Zara
I learnt that when the bead bracelet changes colours it’s telling you that you need to put sunscreen on. I love that at the end of the lesson we could play with the cool instruments. My favourite bit was when Freya showed us the slinky and the cup made a light saver sound from Star Wars. – Coco
PERKS
KINDNESS WEEK
Week 7 is KINDNESS WEEK at BMSS. It is the “K” in PERKS. We will all be reflecting on our behaviour and communication to practise being a DOLPHIN and spread KINDNESS.
Please help by talking to your children about this at home. There are also lots of great picture books in our library that promote kindness.
On our parades this week we spoke with the students about the Six Kindness Concepts.
KINDNESS CONCEPTS
Caring - Feeling and showing concern for others.
Compassion - Being aware when others are sick, sad, or hurt and wanting to help.
Respect - Treating people, places, and things with kindness.
Responsibility - Being reliable to do the things that are expected or required of you.
Helpfulness - Assisting or serving others in a kind way.
Self-Care - Taking care of yourself through kind words, actions, and thoughts.
Preparing for 2024
To ensure we are able to plan as accurately as possible, families are asked to assist with the following:
- Letting any families know, who are intending to have students enrol in any P-6 year level at BMSS, to submit an enrolment form at the school office as soon as possible
- Letting the office staff know of any students who are transferring to other schools at the end of 2023 in an email via info@buderimmountainss.eq.edu.au
- Letting the office staff know of any students who will not be present from the beginning of the school year (eg. For holidays). It is crucial that we know of all students who will be returning, but may be away at the beginning of the school year as they are also counted in our total enrolment and will contribute to maximising the number of teachers we are entitled to. This in turn, reduces the ratio of teachers to students across the school. Once again, please email this information to info@buderimmountainss.eq.edu.au.
Curriculum Corner
Number Facts Fluency
We are excited to share with you a short video of our students playing ‘headache’. Students play this game at school, and it would be perfect to play at home as well. All you need is a deck of playing cards. It is based on addition and subtraction. Students learn the inverse relationship while also increasing their fluency to recall answers quickly. To increase complexity, simply add more players. Another way to differentiate is to play ‘migraine’. The same game but using multiplication and division. It is important for students to explain their thinking in relation to how they calculated the answer.
Click on the link below to watch ‘Headache’ in action.
I would like to thank: Alexandra, Lydia and Alexis for showing us how to play ‘Headache’.
Assessment & Academic Reporting: The Arts & Technologies
In Semester 2, we will revert back to the previous reporting structure where Music, Dance and Drama will be listed in the report card separately. We will keep this structure for both semesters moving forward in 2024.
Reporting on Technologies:
Years 1- 6 students are reported on for Technologies one semester each year. For some year levels this means they might have at the end of the Technologies comment ‘not assessed this semester’. As a school we are reporting on Technologies more than is required as per the Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Framework (CARF), which states we only need to report on Technologies once per band (over a two-year banding).
Prep classes are not reported on for Technologies. They are included within the band of Prep to Year 2. As a school, we immerse our Prep students in Technologies, but only commence reporting as of Year 1. Our Prep students have been immersed in robotics all year (not assessed).
Please ensure the office has your latest email addresses in the database. These addresses are linked to the emailing of academic report cards, which will be sent to parents/carers Tuesday Week 10, Term 4.
Our Yearly Curriculum Overviews are located on the website.

QParents Frequently Asked Questions
How much do I owe?
- QParents enables you to view invoices as well as details of paid invoices. Click the ‘To Pay’ checkbox next to any invoice to make a payment.
- Note: If you are viewing the payment screen within the combined student view (accessed through the Payments tile on your home screen), click on the student name which will navigate you to the individual student profile where you can make a payment.
- Watch this video for an overview of the payments screen and making online payments in QParents.
If I pay an invoice does that mean my child can attend the event?
- You will also need to give your ‘consent’ (permission) for your child to attend. In the past, we have sent out permission letters however we now use QParents to gain your consent. It is important that you provide consent (your permission for your child to attend the event) as well as pay for the invoice.
I notice QParents has ‘Consent Management’. What is this?
- Consent Management is a new feature in QParents. It enables you to provide consent (permission) for events/excursions. This is a great feature as it removes the paperwork previously required for every school event your child would attend (please note, you still need to pay for the event as well as give your consent- two part process).
2024 SRS
The Student Resource Scheme (SRS) includes curriculum resources that are not funded by the department (such as text books, equipment for student's personal use and items used by the student in the classroom). The SRS provides parents with a convenient and cost-effective alternative to individually sourcing curriculum resources and educational programs (i.e. Mathletics, Mathseeds, Reading Eggs).
The scheme ensures that students have the resources required for them to engage with the curriculum for their education, and saves parents time and money in sourcing the prescribed materials elsewhere. Savings are gained through the school’s bulk purchasing practices and hiring arrangements. The scheme is not used to raise funds for other purposes, and revenue collected through the scheme is applied only to the resources and operation of the scheme.
The scheme’s operation, resource inclusions and participation fees were approved by the school’s P&C Association at the meeting held on 10 October 2023.
Resource Inclusions
- All resources included in the SRS are detailed in the attached SRS Resource list. This list is also available on the school’s website. This is a comprehensive list of all resources included in the scheme and their associated costs
- All invoicing for the 2024 SRS will be done via QParents in January 2024
2024 Facilities Hire
State schools are important community assets. The department recognises the valuable role that schools and school infrastructure play in the life of local communities. A school’s priority function is delivering educational programs during the school day. However, outside of school hours schools can be used to facilitate and promote the use of their facilities by members of the local community.
Buderim Mountain State School invites members of the local community to complete an annual application for 2024 Hire Agreements. The following areas will be offered for hire:
- Library courtyard
- Main oval
- Pool (please see further details below)
- Tennis courts (or also known as the netball courts)
At this stage, the new hall will not be offered for hire until Semester 2 (further details will be supplied via the school newsletter). To ensure you are kept up to date with hiring opportunities, please register to receive the school newsletter via email.
How do I go about applying to hire school facilities?
- Review the 2024 Hire fees/charges schedule (see below)
- Complete an Expression of Interest
- Attach all supporting documentation requested in the Expression of Interest (including
Community User Risk Assessment) by 17 November 2023, 1pm
- The principal (and/or delegate) will consider all applications (please make sure you complete all required sections as this forms part of the considerations) and successful hirers will be notified via email
Pool hire
The department's hire agreements differ a little for pools. Pool hire agreements are over a three year period (the start date and the end date must not exceed three years after the commencement date) and require a tender process. If you are interested in hiring the pool, a Request to Quote will need to be completed and emailed to info@buderimmountainss.eq.edu.au, by 17 November 2023, 1pm.
If you have any other questions, please phone 5477 2777.
P&C Events and Special Dates
By popular request, we are proud to announce the P&C will be hosting a Christmas stall this December! This is the perfect opportunity for you and your children to complete your Christmas shopping, with a massive range of incredible locally-produced products set to be on offer. It is your perfect opportunity to secure those Secret Santa gifts required for work Christmas parties, a sweet gift amongst family members, a token of your appreciation to your child’s teacher for the year, or perhaps a little gift of love for a friend.
The Christmas stall will be held in Chappy’s Room on Friday 1 December, and will run very similar to the Mother's and Father's Day Stalls. The stall will be open from 7:45am, so save the date and get ready to lend a hand and/or go shopping!
If you have a business or product you are interested in selling at the stall, we would love to hear from you! Please note that business and stall interest is due by Friday 10 November. Just email Margie at: marketing@bmsspandc.org.

Day For Daniel – Heartfelt Thanks
Keeping kids safe is a message and an imperative that resounds strongly across BMSS and the Buderim community, and today we’re incredibly proud to announce we have collectively and significantly helped the cause.
Thanks to the generosity of BMSS families, we are pleased to say that last week we raised $700 from slushie sales at Banksia Cafe for the Daniel Morcombe Foundation, and an additional $1797 in cash donations collected by BMSS Student Leaders.
That’s almost $2.5k in contributions - what an amazing effort! Heartfelt thanks to all who contributed - alone we may give just a little, but together we can do so much.
