Welcome to Term 2
Welcome back to Term 2, which is 10 weeks in length and concludes on Friday 21 June. We have a number of new families to our school this term and we hope you have had a smooth transition. Buderim Mountain State School is a terrific school and I’m sure you will enjoy your time with us. We ask that all families please see the calendar dates within this newsletter so that you are aware of upcoming events for each year level. Event dates can also be found on our website.
Prep Enrolments
Please be aware that this term we have started taking Prep enrolments for 2025 and we thank families who have submitted enrolment forms already. Early enrolment assists us with planning for the 2025 school year. If you are aware of any families who would like further information on our Prep program, Mr Readshaw will be taking Prep enrolment tours most Mondays from 9:30am throughout Terms 2 and 3 – please book through the school office.
P&C Annual General Meeting
Thank you to all parents who were able to attend the most recent P&C Annual General Meeting. These meetings are an excellent forum to learn more about the operation of the school and assist with planning P&C events and projects. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the tireless work of Rachel O’Brien (President), Terry Colless (Vice President), Megan Colless (Treasurer) and Sophia Agneskis (Secretary) for their work throughout the 2023 school year. Their dedication to their roles and the improvement of our school is impressive and on behalf of the parent body, I would like to acknowledge their contribution to Buderim Mountain State School - the support of the whole P&C committee and volunteer group is also appreciated.
One of the major projects that the P&C has contributed to in 2023 has been funding over $1 million to enhance our new school hall construction including air conditioning, sound/lighting/curtains, a commercial kitchen, acoustics and a dividing net. In 2023, our P&C also continued to improve our tuckshop, uniform shop and OSHC services as well as holding a range of events for our school community. They also funded a number of projects including additional equipment for the Year 1 playground, playground markings on various junior school paths, robotics equipment, shade sails, staff appreciation day, the chaplaincy program, Year 6 graduation, the Arts Extravaganza and custom mesh around the pool and tennis courts. We are extremely lucky to have this incredible level of support from our P&C. Please view the website events calendar to see the fundraising events that are planned for the year so that all families can participate and we can achieve these goals.
A big thank you and congratulations to our P&C team for 2024:

Change in Parent Contact Details:
There are times when we may need to contact parents and carers. Do we have your most up to date contact details? If not, please contact the school on info@buderimmountainss.eq.edu.au so we can update our records. These details include parent/carer’s name, address, phone numbers, email address and emergency contact details. Please remember to contact the school if any of these details change.
Prep Martin's Creek Incursion
YEAR 1 MARTIN’S CREEK INCURSION
In Science this term, Year 1’s have been learning about living things and the environments in which they live. For a real-life lesson, we headed off in our gum boots to the tranquil Martin’s Creek, right on our doorstep. We discussed how the local Gubbi Gubbi people have used this area in times gone by. We investigated the healthy habitats down at the creek and enjoyed fishing for living creatures with our nets. Discussions on what could make this an unhealthy habitat and the effects that would have on living things was also considered. The students had so much fun.
Prep Farm Day
Our Prep students came to school dressed as farmers and enjoyed an exciting and fun filled day participating in farm related activities. Children experienced sensory play, drawing and creating farm animals and machinery, built with construction sets and pretended in dramatic play. A highlight was patting the various farm animals which included hens, piglets, ducks, a rabbit, a lamb and the very popular llama.
All children had an awesome day and went home with happy new memories and more than a little dirty.
Free Dress Day
Thursday 21 March saw us celebrate Harmony Day, with our school leaders organising a gold coin donation free dress day, in which students either wore orange or clothing from their family heritage. Our school raised $980.00, with the money being donated to Story Dogs. A big thank you to everyone who donated.
Student Mobile Phones and Smart Watches
This year the State Government announced a state wide initiative called “Away for the Day”. With this initiative, students are to keep mobile phones switched off and not on them during the school day. All of our year 5 and 6 classrooms have safes, where students are to place their phone when arriving at school. Students in lower year levels are still to hand their mobile phone to the school office staff upon arriving at school. All students can collect their phone from the safe or office when school finishes at 3pm. Wearable devices, such as smart watches must also be switched to School Mode so phone calls, text messages and other notifications cannot be sent or received during the school day.
A reminder also to parents that should you need to send an important message to your child during the school day, it should be done via the school office. A big thank you to all parents and carers for ensuring Smart Watches are set to ‘school mode’.
In our Classrooms
PREP AB-
We have been very busy settling into school in Prep AB. We have done so many wonderful things and had some exciting new experiences. Some of our favourites include:
*James, Addison, Eden, Vijay, Arty, Ellis, Lucia, Maya and Emi have loved spending time with our Buddy from 5MT.
*Kiara and Milo love the Prep playground.
*Ivy, Phoenix and Quincy enjoyed our walk to Buderim Park and had great fun playing in the playground.
*Sebastian loves having his Mum come and help with groups.
*Sadie enjoys reading all the different books in the classroom.
*Maggie loves going to Parade with Mr Readshaw.
*Remy loves playing with all the exciting toys in the classroom.
*Samuel was amazed by the enormous toad he saw in the school grounds!
YEAR 1 TB-
Leo – we learned to say hello in different languages and to count to 120
Jasper – I liked making the Easter baskets and I practiced my handwriting
Emily – I learned the purpose of narratives is to entertain and the characters in a story are entertaining too because we have to use our imagination.
Cassidy – I can count to 120
Matilda – We learned about keeping livings things healthy
Henry – I learned to retell stories
Alfred – We learned about addition and that we need to add two parts together to make a whole
Eliza – We retold stories
Talia – I learned that our letters can’t be too big or too small and they need to go the right way round
Lia – We practiced counting up to 120
YEAR 2BR-
“We got to watch caterpillars emerge into a butterfly. Once they had finished going through metamorphosis, we got to release them and see them fly. They were amazing!” - Addison
“The butterfly life cycle goes through 4 main stages which is an egg, caterpillar, chrysalis and butterfly. This is called metamorphosis” - Charlotte
“We got to watch the caterpillars go through metamorphosis. I liked when the caterpillar was wriggling upside down. I also liked to watch them emerge from the pupa stage into the butterfly stage. Some larva did not survive. I love when the butterflies got released, it was fun!” - Louie B
“We got some caterpillars in our class. They ate and ate and got really fat and turned into chrysalises. It took a little while to emerge from the chrysalises as a butterfly. The butterflies ate some cordial on a sponge that tasted like the nectar that they get from the flowers outside” – Solene
YEAR 3AM -
This term in English, 3AM have been reading Matty Forever and finding noun groups and evaluative adjectives. I like reading the book because it has lots of exciting tension. We have also been writing a story about friendship, editing and writing our good copy. I like writing stories. By Riaan
YEAR 4JM -
Term 1 was a busy term in 4JM. In English, we wrote another chapter for “The Twits” novel, we began our decimal learning in Maths, investigated erosion and weathering during Science lessons and in HASS learned about our values and identity. We also creatively learned to use water colour with our horrible Mr and Mrs Twit portraits, along with designing an illustration to match our written chapter.
Last term we read a novel called The Twits. After we read all of the book, we wrote a chapter that would slide into the book. My favourite part was when we typed up the story. Mine was very funny and gross. Quinn 4JM
Last term I enjoyed HASS because when we did our identity trees, we learned that no two people are the same – even identical twins are different. We also learned that everyone is special and unique. People can be similar, but no two people are exactly the same. Addi 4JM
YEAR 5JD -
CPR - Cardiopulmonary resuscitation - In week ten of term one, the year fives participated in a CPR demonstration. We learned that you must push 50mm into the chest to get blood to the head and your brain in a repeated pulse to the songs below.
- Staying Alive by the Bee Gees
- Baby shark by pink frog
- The man by Taylor swift etc
They also taught us how to use a defibrillator, which is a machine that tells you through the steps of CPR. It also helps resuscitate the patient. It measures the heartbeat and sends an electrical shock to get the heart get working again. With CPR you must line the compressions up with the arm pit and draw your fingers to the centre of the chest. Some things that can help you are: Can you hear me? Open your eyes? What is your name? Squeeze my hand or a shorter way is to remember the word COWS. With CPR you must check that you are not in danger to help the patient. By Hannah F in 5JD
Hi, my name is Wes. I am in 5JD. I will be telling you about our science assessment.
The task was “Create a Creature”. The first creature we had to create lived in a desert biome. We had to pick its body parts. E.g: tail, body, neck, head, feet and eyes. After we had picked the parts that created our animal that would fit the environment, we had to write about why we chose them and how it would help our animal in its environment. The second animal lived in a newly discovered environment. It was kind of like swampy, forestry biome. The temperature was around 5 degrees Celsius. After we finished creating the two characters, we had to write three structural differences between them and their environments.
YEAR 6GE -
Year 6 have recently completed our Chemistry unit, where we did many fun experiments in the laboratory. We focused on the States of Matter and their properties and the effects of cooling and heating on various substances. We discovered which materials, when changed, were reversible and which ones were irreversible. Our favourite was cooking, eating and burning pikelets. By 6GE

Athletics
With our athletics carnival happening on Thursday June 13, we are well and truly underway with planning and preparation. Similar to last year, all students who are wishing to compete in field events will need to nominate via the online form, which will be emailed to all year 5 and 6 students and the parents of year 4 students during week 6 of term 2. To ensure the day runs to schedule, we will be unable to take student nominations after the online forms closing date.
During HPE lessons this term, all year 4, 5 and 6 students will be learning the correct technique required for each of the field events, and will have the opportunity to develop their skills during these lessons.
Students who meet qualifying times and/or distances may be selected in our school athletics team, to compete at the district trials.
Due to time constraints on the day of the carnival, some athletics events will occur during break times leading up to the carnival. These include:
28 May - 200m heats – Children born: 2014 at 1.40; and children born 2013 and 2012 at 2.15
30 May - 200m finals at 2.15

Easter Hat Parade
There was much excitement amongst the lower school on the last day of term. Much preparation, hard work, glitter, flowers, eggs, hot glue guns and creativity had gone into the creation of our Preps’ Easter Hats. The hall was abuzz with joy and laughter as the children paraded proudly in the hall to the cheers of all our friends and family. The prep children would like to chorus a huge thank you to all our Mums, Dads, Grandparents and Carers for helping us to make beautiful hats for the parade.
Some comments from the children about our wonderful morning:
“My hat has chocolate on it!! I love it!”
“My Dad helped me glue all these little chicks on the hat and I like the flowers.”
“My hat is so tall it almost reaches the roof!”
My favourite part of the hat is all the eggs. But they keep falling off!”
Buderim Community ANZAC March
It was very pleasing to see more than four hundred Buderim Mountain State School students participate in the annual ANZAC Day ceremony and march on Thursday the 25th of April. Students marched from Woolworths wearing full school uniform, down Main Street, ending on the school oval ready for the ANZAC ceremony. Due to the overwhelming number of students involved, not all students received a certificate. These students can collect a certificate from the school office. Thank you to all students and families who participated.
A big thankyou to the 46 member senior choir as well as Mr Jackson and Mrs Croxton who performed to a very high standard at the ANZAC day ceremony.
2025 ANZAC day
Facilities Upgrade
Over the school holidays, our school was again a construction zone with many different facilities projects occurring. This has included a new storage shed near the Prep playground, operable walls in four of our Prep classes, upgrade to our school fence, new carpet in the music and instrumental room, interactive whiteboards in a number of our classrooms as well as new waterproof bag storage for two of our Prep classes.
Work is continuing on the new hall, and we should see the handover occur this term. We are looking forward to using this grand space for sports, performances as well as whole school events.
Instrumental Music Workshops
We are thrilled to share the exciting highlights from the recent Super Sharp Seniors Workshops held for Year 5 and 6 students at Brightwater State School.
The workshops brought together young musicians from four different schools: Buderim Mountain, Brightwater, Mountain Creek and Mooloolaba State Schools. With over 100 enthusiastic students participating over the two days, the atmosphere was charged with energy and excitement.
These workshops were organised to provide students with the invaluable opportunity to immerse themselves in playing within a larger ensemble alongside peers of a similar level. They had the privilege of working with other Instrumental Music teachers and were guided by the expertise of Alisa Jones, the Head of Conducting and Ensembles from the North Coast Region.
Beyond the musical sessions, students engaged in some enjoyable activities including chair drumming and the rhythmic game ‘the beat goes round the room’ which added an extra layer of enjoyment to the experience.
A big thank-you goes out to our incredible parent helpers – Denis Feletto, Andrea Johnson, Clint Lombard and Aidan Sheerin who generously volunteered their time and energy to ensure the smooth running of the workshops. Your support was invaluable and we are truly grateful for your dedication.
To all the parents and families who joined us for the culminating concert, we thank-you for your unwavering support of Instrumental Music. We are certain you were as impressed as we were by the remarkable progress the students made in just one day.
Overall, the workshops were a resounding success thanks to the dedication and hard work of our students. We are incredibly proud of their achievements and have no doubt that these experiences will encourage and inspire them to continue on their musical journey with passion and commitment.
Road Safety
A reminder to all students to remember to use the supervised crossings or to cross at lights when leaving the school grounds. Students have been reminded to cross at lights when the traffic lights are Red, and the walk symbol is green. Thank you for keeping our students safe by using designated crossings.
School Uniform
Thank you to all families who ensure students are in full school uniform each day. As the weather will begin to get cooler this term, it is important that all students continue to wear the correct Buderim Mountain State School winter uniform. We are fortunate to have excellent support from our parents in ensuring students are in full school uniform each day. Thank you for continuing this and only wearing the following winter uniform to school:
- Unisex jackets – bottle green and maroon double fleece with embroidered logo
- Unisex pullovers – bottle green and maroon double fleece with embroidered logo
- Girls long bottle green lycra pants, tracksuit or bottle green tights under skorts
- Boys long bottle green cargo or tracksuit pants
- Additional winter items must be plain bottle green or maroon in colour (including jumpers)
The current Buderim Mountain State School Uniform can be found in the below link:
PERKS
The PERKS Project focus for Weeks 3 & 4 this term is the topic of Communication and Behaviour Types.
The lessons will examine the following:
- What is communication?
- How do people communicate?
- What are the three styles of communication/behaviour?
In the lessons the three styles of communication/behaviour are depicted as these three sea creatures:
- JELLYFISH – do not share their feelings with others and act like everything is OK. This is called PASSIVE communication or behaviour.
- SHARKS – use their words or their body to hurt other people or objects. This is known as AGGRESSIVE communication or behaviour.
- DOLPHINS – are able to express their feelings in a kind, firm and respectful way. This is known as ASSERTIVE communication or behaviour.
Students will explore what the different types of communication/behaviours look like and how they can make positive choices.
You will see the following posters around the school with these important messages. Please take the time to let your children share their PERKS learning and use our common language with them.
Keeping our Students Safe
To assist with keeping all of our students safe, we would like to remind everyone our playground equipment is not permitted for use before or after school. The equipment requires a teacher on duty to supervise all children for safe play. To further assist in keeping our students safe, we would like to remind all people entering and leaving our school grounds to kindly close the gate behind them, and to use the crossings around our school when moving across roads. We appreciate your support with following school procedures and to ensure our children are safe.

QParents Frequently Asked Questions
How much do I owe?
- QParents enables you to view invoices as well as details of paid invoices. Click the ‘To Pay’ checkbox next to any invoice to make a payment.
- Note: If you are viewing the payment screen within the combined student view (accessed through the Payments tile on your home screen), click on the student name which will navigate you to the individual student profile where you can make a payment.
- Watch this video for an overview of the payments screen and making online payments in QParents.
If I pay an invoice does that mean my child can attend the event?
- You will also need to give your ‘consent’ (permission) for your child to attend. In the past, we have sent out permission letters however we now use QParents to gain your consent. It is important that you provide consent (your permission for your child to attend the event) as well as pay for the invoice.
I notice QParents has ‘Consent Management’. What is this?
- Consent Management is a new feature in QParents. It enables you to provide consent (permission) for events/excursions. This is a great feature as it removes the paperwork previously required for every school event your child would attend (please note, you still need to pay for the event as well as give your consent- two part process).
2024 SRS
The Student Resource Scheme (SRS) includes curriculum resources that are not funded by the department (such as text books, equipment for students' personal use and items used by the student in the classroom). The SRS provides parents with a convenient and cost-effective alternative to individually sourcing curriculum resources and educational programs (i.e. Mathletics, Mathseeds, Reading Eggs).
The scheme ensures that students have the resources required for them to engage with the curriculum for their education, and saves parents time and money in sourcing the prescribed materials elsewhere. Savings are gained through the school’s bulk purchasing practices and hiring arrangements. The scheme is not used to raise funds for other purposes, and revenue collected through the scheme is applied only to the resources and operation of the scheme.
The scheme’s operation, resource inclusions and participation fees were approved by the school’s P&C Association at the meeting held on 10 October 2023.
Resource Inclusions
- All resources included in the SRS are detailed in the attached SRS Resource list. This list is also available on the school’s website. This is a comprehensive list of all resources included in the scheme and their associated costs
- All invoicing for the 2024 SRS has been issued via QParents

The Circuit Crew Coding Club Sponsorship Opportunity
Did you know our school was the first to open on the Sunshine Coast? Since that time in 1875, we have gained a prestigious reputation as a centre of excellence. Almost 150 years later, we offer a vast array of extra-curricular activities, support programs and special interest clubs to stay on top of emerging technologies, societal trends and emerging business needs. One such program is our Coding Club, dubbed the Buderim Circuit Crew.
During the year, Circuit Crew students test their skills and coding abilities by taking part in a range of coding competitions, including RoboRave. This is a major robotics event that takes place at the Sunshine Coast University. The Circuit Crew have had enormous success in competitions locally and nationally throughout 2023, in particular at RoboRave, where the team were crowned local champions. The Circuit Crew subsequently went on to win at the regional and state level, and are now preparing for the Asia Pacific Championships in July 2024.
That’s where you come in! The Circuit Crew seek sponsorship to continue skill acquisition and to support efforts on the competition circuit, particularly in relation to upcoming international challenges.
Head to our website to view our Sponsorship Proposal so your business can partner with the Circuit Crew in mutually beneficial arrangement that increases brand awareness for your business locally and on an international stage. With packages from just $250, it’s an affordable way to help advance the new generation in the technologies sphere. Go to: https://www.bmsspandc.org/circuitcrew to learn more.
