Welcome Back
Welcome back to Term 3 and a big welcome to all of our new families for Term 3 – we have had many new enrolments from interstate, overseas and the local area. We hope you enjoy your time with us at Buderim Mountain State School. We have another big term ahead - this term is 10 weeks in length and finishes on Friday 16 September.
New Newsletter Format
We hope all parents enjoy our newly formatted newsletter, with this being the first edition. Newsletters will now be sent to parents twice each term at the end of Week 2 and Week 6.
Year 4-6 Athletics Carnival
Congratulations to all of our Year 4-6 students for your efforts at last term’s athletics carnival. It was terrific to see so many students participating throughout the course of the day. A special mention must go to the following age champions:
2012 Aaliyah T, Beau B
2011 Evie R, Jack K
2010 Elle T, Henry R
Well done to Cheropin house who were the overall winners on the day with Walla in 2nd place, Iterra in 3rd place and Yuamala in 4th place. Congratulations also to Yuamala who were the Toohey’s Cup Relay winners.
A big thanks must go to Mr Hawes for organizing the day as well as all staff who assisted. Thank you to all of our parents and carers who were able to attend and support our students.
Queensland Cross Country Trials
Well done to Byron B and Will O for representing BMSS at the Qld State Cross Country Championships on Sunday 17th and Monday 18th July held at Rivermount College in Yatala. Both boys ran very fast races on a challenging course with many steep hills, uneven ground and mud pits.
Congratulations to Will O for winning a Qld State silver medal as part of the U10 boys Sunshine Coast 5 X 1km relay team. Will O was the final runner and sprinted the 1km with determination to bring the team home with a medal.
Sunshine Coast Representative Netball
During the school holidays, Isla F competed with her Sunshine Coast Representative team at the Junior Nissan Netball State Age Titles at Pine Rivers and her U12 Gold team came 3rd in the State. Congratulations Isla on this fantastic achievement.
Teachers v Students Netball
2022 was the first year to have a teachers vs students netball challenge. We had high hopes for the students' team, but when we saw the teachers walking across the oval, we knew we were done for. We saw Mrs Mac, one of the tallest teachers I know, Mrs Brennan who is short but super feisty and Mr Neighbour who is a bomb on the netball court. The whistle started and we were off! The teachers started with the ball and whizzed down the court at high speed. We couldn’t stop them because they were using their height as an advantage. The teachers scored goal after goal after goal. They were unstoppable. Then all of a sudden, we were able to use our speed and agility to move around them like cones. Mr Johnson tried to intimidate us with his loud growl but we wouldn’t let anything stop us. Out of nowhere Mrs Fielding got an intercept - what a bummer we were so close. It was a great game but we were walloped by the Teachers. We want to thank all the teachers who were involved because we wouldn’t have been able to do it with out you, Mrs Brennan and Mrs Dalton for helping organise it and finally Mrs Suosaari for being an amazing umpire.
By Millie R & Isla F.
Rugby Union Representatives
Congratulations to Frank N, Levi T & Kellen O on representing Nambour Districts in the Rugby Union. Nambour Districts were undefeated throughout the trials held in Caloundra RUC on June 1&2 against teams across the Sunshine Coast.
Roborave Robotics Competition
It is with great excitement we share with you the success and engagement of our students at RoboRave Australia, last Sunday at the University of the Sunshine Coast. RoboRave Australia has the largest robotics competition in the southern hemisphere and we had a total of nine teams attend on the day.
Four teams entered the ‘a-MAZE-ing Challenge’. The goal was to design, build and program a robot that could follow a raised wooden maze without falling off. Completing the maze before the time limit added bonus points. We would like to congratulate the ‘Cosmic Coders’ for placing second in this event. Congratulations Ava F and Oliver K.
Five teams entered the ‘SUMOBOT Challenge’. The goal was to design, build and program an autonomous robot that could search for and push an opponent sumo robot off an elevated wrestling ring.
It was wonderful to see our students work well together as a team and support each other. While coding and robotics is the future of our world, it also builds our students’ resilience, persistence, team work and problem-solving skills. These are effective life-long skills in all areas of our lives.
Our students who attended on the day: Ava F, Oliver K, Hayden S, Xanthe W, Harrison K, Liam K, Xander R, Charlie B, Hamish T, Mason W, Cooper J, Harper R, Neiva R, Elle, T, Kaide H, Flynn D, Gus W, Charlie W, Cooper M, Fletcher K, Ethan D, Harper H and Xavier P.
We would also like to thank our dedicated robotics teachers for working with our students in the lead-up to the event and for attending on the day: Jacinta Dalton, Craig Johnson, Julie Candosin and Kristie O’Keefe.

Year 5 Elev8 - Student Leadership Program
On Wednesday of week 10, year 5 students participated in the Elev8 Leadership day, run by Motiv8 Sports. In their groups, they participated in a range of team building activities and competitions where they had to work together and encourage each other to achieve their goals. It was great to see so many students demonstrate resilience when faced with challenges and display fantastic leadership qualities.

Prep Super Sound Celebration
On Thursday 23rd June, the Prep students had a dress up day for Super Sound Celebration! This event acknowledged all the effort each Prep student has put into their learning to develop their alphabet letter-sound knowledge. The students had free choice to dress up as anything starting with their favourite sound. There were many fantastic costumes including fairies, dinosaurs, superheros, fairy tale characters and even Harry Potter! Each class rotated through all of the other Prep classrooms where we participated in activities that started with the letter-sound of that class. In Prep F there were fairy wands, fishing, fences and funny faces. In Prep D there was dinosaur craft and many dinosaur activities. In Prep C there were caterpillar necklaces, construction and cars. In Prep B there were bug masks, bug fingerprints and bug games. In Prep V there was a volcano, vet, vegetables and vertical towers. In Prep SV there were many different sand and snow fine motor activities. At the end of all of the activities, we had a celebration parade and dance. Thank you to our parents for helping with our costumes and congratulations to all of the Prep students for learning their letter-sounds.

Year 4 Wildlife HQ Excursions
Today Wildlife HQ came to our school and they bought two lizards, two snakes, one alligator and one koala. One of the snakes was a jungle python and it strangles its prey to kill it. It had browny-greens and spots of yellowy-brown. One of the lizards was a shingle back lizard. It is called that because its back is like shingles and its tail looks like its head and it moves so that birds think it is it's head but it is its tail. Then it will poo in its mouth. The other lizard was called a frilled neck lizard. It’s called that because when it feels threatened or scared its neck frills up. It can also run very fast on its hind legs and can also climb trees very quickly as its tail helps it.
To catch its prey, the alligator will plan out its movements and then it will attack the animal and do a death roll which is where it holds on to the animal and rolls or it takes the animal under the water and drowns it. Once this is done, they will rip it up into little pieces and then eat it. To reproduce the mother will collect sticks from her home in the water and bring it to the bank and make a nest. She will leave it until she lays the eggs, then return to the water and check on the eggs. Once the eggs have hatched the mother will stay with the babies for up to a month and then she will leave. Sometimes the babies will be eaten by birds, snakes and sometimes even adult alligators.
My favourite was the koala because it was cute, fluffy and cuddly. I also found their life cycle and how they live interesting. Also, did you know when the koalas are born they eat their mother’s poo because eucalyptus tree leaves are toxic otherwise? They will stay with their mother for up to a year and then they will leave.
In conclusion I thought it was an amazing incursion because I learnt so much and we got to pat the koala. Thank you, Mrs Mannion, for organising it. Now I know so much about koalas, snakes, lizards and alligators.

My report on Wildlife HQ
Wildlife HQ came to visit Year 4, in the undercover area near the hall. 4RB and 4D attended together and we waited patiently for Lachlan and Anne-Marie to arrive.
I felt excited beforehand, because I didn’t know what animals would be there.
My favourite animal was the koala. I liked the koala because it was cute and cuddly and also because it was soft and furry.
I was a bit horrified at the reptiles because they looked concerning.
I learnt that snakes have to have a flat head to be venomous. And also, I learnt that a five year - old alligator can bite off your whole finger!
My absolute favourite part was when we were able to pat Arlo the koala. It was so adorable.
I felt a bit scared when the reptiles were out during the activities but when the koala was out I felt happy and relaxed.
Koala facts Did You Know?...
- Koalas eat up to 1kg of gum leaves everyday
- Male koalas are 15kg in weight and grow up to 80 centimetres long
- Female koalas are 11kg in weight and grow up to 70 centimetres long
- Baby koalas eat their mother's poo as food because they can not digest their food/eucalyptus leaves yet so they have to develop a special stomach for them to eat the eucalyptus leaves
- Predators and Threats: Pythons, Goannas, Dingos and Eagles
- A newborn koala joey is blind and fur – less
Thank you Mrs Mannion for organising this incursion! I felt calm and happy afterwards, because I thought I was lucky to see all the creatures here at school.

Year 6 Camp
Our camp started Wednesday morning, which was lucky given that Tuesday had been pouring down with rain. The bus ride was filled with chatter and laughter. After we arrived there was a quick chat about camp rules, then we were off to lunch. It sure was delicious! Next, we started our camp activities, and boy were they fun! Catapulting and archery were an exciting addition to this year’s camp, whilst the giant swing was one of the best activities as everyone faced their fears and conquered them. Fish, chips and salad were on the menu for dinner on the first night. Sticky date pudding and whipped cream was one of the best desserts; in our humble opinion, at least! The first night activity was laser tag and it was a favourite amongst the year sixes.
Thursday was filled with more exciting activities; mountain biking, team development, canoeing and stand-up paddle board were all part of the adventure. The night hike though the bush – under a crystal-clear full moon - was a peaceful end to the second day. Filled with happy memories and lots of laughter, everyone was sad to leave on Friday afternoon. However, we will remember this experience for the rest of our lives.
2022-year 6 camp at Noosa Northshore was an extraordinary experience. Everyday started and ended with delightful meals in the dining area. The activities pushed us outside of our comfort zones giving us a sense of achievement as we completed each challenge. Camp taught us to encourage our classmates and appreciate all the effort the teachers and instructors put into helping us grow. A huge thanks to all the staff members who participated; we couldn’t have had such as great camp without you.

Facilities Upgrade
We are very fortunate to have a number of exciting facilities upgrades taking place in our school over the 2022/23 school years.
New Classrooms
After the carpark refurbishment finished in Term 1, we moved straight onto the installation of a new classroom block with 8 classrooms. The new building also has a kitchenette and small group teaching space between all classrooms. At this stage, all of our Year 6 classes as well as two of our Year 5 classes will be moving into the new building.
Adjacent to the new classroom block, we will have half-court basketball, handball courts, outdoor terraced seating and landscaping installed. This will be an excellent new play area for our students.
New School Hall
In January, the construction of our new hall will begin at the front of the school (on top of the existing basketball court and adjacent carpark). Attached are a number of images of the hall, which will also house our new tuckshop; indoor sporting courts; a stage with curtains, sound, lighting, changing rooms etc; foyer/meeting room and amenities. This construction is expected to take most of the 2023 school year to complete.
We also have a number of other smaller upgrades to occur in the near future including improvements to eating areas, replacement of covered links and gutters and installation of operable walls between selected classrooms. Our school has also recently acquired some additional land on Gloucester Road (adjacent to the Prep playground), which will see the eventual expansion of our playground areas.
Buderim Mountain State School New Hall
School Opinion Surveys
The annual suite of School Opinion Surveys will be conducted in Term 3 and will close on 12 August 2022. All families, school staff and students in target year levels (5 & 6) have been invited to participate. We encourage you to take this opportunity to have your say about what our school does well, and how we can improve.
An invitation to complete the Parent/Caregiver Survey was emailed to one parent/caregiver per family in the week beginning 11 July. The invitation was sent from the Department of Education, not the school, and it will have the subject line School Opinion Survey for parents and caregivers, 2022. Check your junk email folders if you can’t find it. The survey can be completed as soon as the invitation is received and will take approximately 5 minutes using a computer, tablet or smart phone.
2023 Classes
At the start of next term, we will begin the process of developing class lists for 2023. This process is always predicted for the beginning of the school year and confirmed on the eighth day of the new school year. At Buderim Mountain State School, we have a very detailed process, which takes place over a number of weeks to create classes. This includes use of a software program to assist with the creation of classes based on gender, academics and appropriate learning partners.
If parents have any specific requests regarding their child’s placement for 2023, please send an email to our administration staff by Friday 16 September to info@buderimmountainss.eq.edu.au. Please be aware of the following:
- Parents are not able to request a specific teacher for their child.
- Please do not submit any requests for your child to be placed with another child, as all children will do this at school, by choosing up to 5 learning partners they would like to be in a class with – we do guarantee that they will be placed with at least 1 of the learning partners they have requested.
- Generally, the request needs to identify characteristics or concerns relating to your child which you feel need to be taken into consideration in regards to class placement.
- Students will be informed of their provisional 2023 class in the final week of the school year (Wednesday 7 December) via an email to parents.
- While all requests are given due consideration, please be aware that it is not always possible to guarantee these requests.
- We are unable to consider any requests submitted after the due date (end of Term 3).
Report Cards & Parent Teacher Interviews
Congratulations to all students who have worked to their full potential this semester. All parents and carers were emailed a copy of your child’s report cards last week - Friday 15 July. This report card will include a summary of each student’s achievement levels across all learning areas as well as students’ ratings for their efforts in each learning area. Students will also receive a result for their overall behavior as well as a general comment.
Please also be aware that parent teacher interviews will be offered next week (25-28 July). Individual teachers determine the times of their availability during that week and once again, we have used the SOBS online booking system for parents to book interviews. Classroom teachers have sent out invitations this term.
The Perks Project
In our PERKS lesson last term, we focussed on our emotions and self-regulation. Self-regulation allows us to manage our feelings or emotions when we are faced with a situation that is tough to handle.
When children are learning to regulate their emotions, they sometimes need help from an adult. We call this co-regulation.
We would love you to discuss the key messages and zones of regulation with your children at home so that all of the significant adults in their lives are using the same language.
Key messages are:
- Everyone has feelings
- It’s okay to talk about your feelings
- Get to know your feelings
Our students were introduced to the “ZONES OF REGULATION” which are colour coded.
- GREEN EMOTIONS – “I AM GOOD TO GO”
- YELLOW EMOTIONS – “I NEED TO TAKE CARE”
- BLUE EMOTIONS – “I AM RUNNING LOW”
- RED EMOTIONS – “I NEED TO STOP”
In relation to the various types of emotions, we discussed what each of the zones looks like and what it feels like so that students are able to identify what they are feeling and take steps to regulate those feelings where necessary.
The ideal zone to be operating in is the GREEN ZONE and students were given some strategies on how to get back to the green zone through co-regulation or self-regulation.
Students in Prep to Year 3 will use the EMOTION THERMOMETERS (see poster below) to help them self-regulate while students in Years 4 to 6 will use the ZONES OF REGULATION mat (see poster below). The third poster gives strategies on how to get ourselves back into the GREEN ZONE if we find ourselves in another one.
Teachers follow up with this learning in classrooms. We invite you to chat with your children about their understandings and how they might use this new knowledge.

Tuckshop ordering and Food Allergies:
To ensure the safety of all students and especially those who are at risk of an anaphylactic reaction to certain food allergens, it is a requirement that parents/carers follow the procedure below when ordering from the school’s tuckshop, The Banksia Café.
All families who have children with food allergies which result in anaphylaxis need to order online only. Families must communicate and declare the student’s food allergy by using the 'Allergen Alert' tab on Flexi Schools for each and every order, EVERY TIME, this includes ordering for both breaks. Following this procedure will allow us to have a clear idea of the allergens thus providing safer management of orders and ensuring that orders are correctly handled, limiting the potential of any cross contamination.
OSHC
Happy OSHC Educators Day
The National Out of School Hour Care Educators Day is the annual National day to celebrate and recognise the vital role Educators play in the lives of children.
This year's theme is 'OOSH Educators: Rising to every challenge'. And despite the many challenges the last few years especially have presented, our OSHC team have been a constant positive presence in our children's lives.
It's a *HUGE* thank you to our outstanding leader Adam and his team, who tirelessly support and nurture our children's development before school, after school and during the holidays.
The time, dedication and support you offer every child at the service is FANTASTIC. We are very grateful and proud of the Buderim OSHC team!
Trivia Night
Trivia Night is back, and it will be a night to remember! 🙌
Film buffs and trivia lovers – and everyone in between - it's time to get your friends together for a fun night of trivia, games and good times. It's been a few years since our last one, so we thought we'd bring it back. This is an excellent opportunity to reconnect and meet new people – without the kids!
The host and MC for the evening will be the sparkly Miss Lady Saint Diva. She's a well-known and loved Sunshine Coast Drag Queen who recently hosted the SC Mardi Gras, so she knows how to have fun. Miss Lady is the ultimate games night professional and will turn the sass up high for a night of epic good fun.
There'll be games, fantastic prizes, an auction and a raffle, so please bring cash. It's a fun night out regardless of whether you are a trivia boss or have never played!
