2023 School Review
In 2023, our school will be reviewed by the Education department as part of its commitment to review all schools at least once every four years. In preparation for this review, as well as gathering insights to inform our future strategic plan (2023-2026), we would like to gather community feedback.
It would be greatly appreciated if you could complete this anonymous survey, providing feedback about the school’s strengths and potential areas for improvement. This survey will remain open until the end of the term.
Music Matters- BMSS Music
Hello wonderful Buderim Mountain SS community.
As a new teacher to the school in 2022 let me say how grateful I am to be in this position. The staff, the administration, the P & C, parents, and the students themselves (everyone) have contributed to me feeling appreciated and very welcome. Having said that, I find myself somewhat in shock that we’re now well into the second half of the year already!
I will quickly glowingly mention (introduce) my two ‘offsiders’ in the music department who are also new to the school this year, Mr Stuart Scullet-Dean (Strings) and Mrs Margot Payne (Brass, Woodwind & Percussion).
Both of these enthusiastic, experienced and hard working music educators have waltzed in with high expectations and respectfully demanded the same from all of the students. As a result, the students are loving it and the bands are sounding amazing.
We also have Junior (Year 1, 2 and 3) and Senior (Year 4, 5 and 6) choirs up and running. The Senior choir will perform at the Year 3 & 4 parade on Thursday in week 8 for the first time this year. They are super excited. The Junior choir performed at the end of last term and will do so again before the end of Term 3. I’ll keep you posted.
Also, in the Arts sphere this term is the annual running of “Buderim’s Got Talent”. This has been wonderfully managed by senior leaders in the Arts committee. We are into the second week of heats with all finals to be held in the hall early Term 4. After watching and judging some of the heats, I have been blown away by the student performances so far. The heats have been run without an audience but come finals, will be open to a very, very lucky audience that will be spoilt for entertainment.
In the music room on a day to day basis we have students creating sound stories, playing ukulele, writing songs and discovering the importance of music in celebration and life. I find the students are engaged, brave and most importantly, open to any musical challenge placed in front of them.
As if there isn’t enough going on, I constantly have students turning up at the music room to show me the amazing skills they are developing (all very welcome of course). Looking to the future, I see the development of a “Rock Band” program to feed the need of those that just have to ‘ROCK OUT’.
Regards,
Pete Jackson - Classroom music teacher

Instrumental Music
The Instrumental Music Program is a wonderful opportunity for your child to learn a musical instrument through the school and to participate in the school String Ensemble and Concert Bands. If your child is in either Year 2, 3, 4 or 5 and is interested in learning a String, Brass, Woodwind or Percussion instrument and would like to join our Instrumental Music Program in 2023, please click on the link below to complete the Instrumental Music Expression of Interest Survey by Friday 26th August 2022.

Junior Band Workshop
Congratulations to the Junior Band students who participated in a recent workshop with musicians from Brightwater State School. The students had the opportunity to work with a guest conductor from Brisbane, Mrs Alisa Jones. The workshop helped to improve student’s listening and practical skills, as well as the overall band sound and confidence in the ensemble setting. It was wonderful to see how well both schools worked and played together as well as making new ‘muso’ friends.
The culminating concert for parents at the end of the day was fantastic. It was amazing to see how much they achieved in just one day.
Representative Sports
Congratulations to Sophie B who was recently selected in the Nambour District Cricket Team to compete at the Sunshine Coast Regional Trials.
Congratulations also to Jai A, who after playing in the Nambour District Softball Team, was selected in the Sunshine Coast Regional Trials to compete at the Queensland Trials.

Australian Pinnacle Dance Challenge
On Saturday 30th July, the Buderim Junior and Senior Dance Teams competed at the Pinnacle Dance Challenge at St Teresa’s College at Noosa. This was our second competition performing in front of an audience, so we weren’t as nervous this time around!
It was a wonderful experience to be part of a team and represent our school and work towards making our dance as polished as possible. The competition was tough on the day with many schools performing. The juniors came third for their section, Junior Jazz. The seniors also did well in a very competitive field and while they did not place, they definitely received the loudest crowd applause!
We have learnt so much about teamwork and persistence but most of all we have had so much fun! We have one more performance in September and cannot wait! Mrs McConnel and Miss O’Keefe have worked so hard the entire year to help us perform at our best and we hope we make them proud!
By Xanthe W and Sophie J
Year 3 Cosmodome Incursion
As part of our Science Unit ‘Night and Day’, all of the Year 3 children had the opportunity to visit the Cosmodome, an igloo-shaped dome providing full-dome shows with imagery surrounding the viewer. It was a fantastic addition to our Science Curriculum, providing a learning opportunity with a difference. Teachers and students alike really enjoyed their Cosmodome experience.
An insight into our Cosmodome experience by Eliya and Will (3B):
Year 3 went to Cosmodome to learn about how day and night happens. We learnt that the Earth is a sphere. In the past, people thought that the world was flat and if you travelled too far, you would fall off the edge and monsters would get you!
We also learnt that the Sun does not move; it is the Earth that rotates around the Sun. Daytime means that Australia is facing the Sun. The Earth is always rotating around the sun so each side of the Earth gets sunlight. It takes 365 days for the Earth to orbit around the Sun. We had a fun time at Cosmodome and we learnt a lot.
Prep 100 Days of School Celebration
On Monday 1st August the Prep students and staff celebrated 100 days of Prep. This included dressing up as 100-year olds. We did lots of fun activities in our room including Race to 100 Maths Games, writing what we have learned in the last 100 days and building with 100 objects.
Prep Street Science Incursion
The Preps had an exciting visit from the Street Science team. They had so much fun learning about science and participating in a snow making sensory workshop. Students learnt about what they can see, hear, smell, taste and touch. They participated in a hands-on investigation where they made and explored snow. The Preps described the snow as fluffy, soft, squishy and like cotton wool.

Paul Franklin Rugby League Competition
In week 3 of Term 3, Buderim Mountain entered a mixed year 5 and 6 rugby league side into the 2022 Paul Franklin Shield rugby league carnival. It is the first leg of the Mark West Cup carnival that is run for the Sunshine Coast Region. All primary schools are invited to participate.
Our team has actually been training since Term 4 last year (when it wasn’t raining) and were called the Mark West Cup Squad. They even had the option to buy a training shirt.
The Paul Franklin carnival day was excellent in terms of organisation, participation and results.
Our side finished in third place but were very unlucky not to have won the day.
We won our pool matches 24 – 0 and 28 – 0. This placed us in the semi-finals which finished 12-12 but we missed out as the other school scored first try. This team went on to win the day.
Our final for and against finished at 140-20 which was a great effort.
Thank you to Mr Johnson and Miss Page for your coaching in the lead up and good work on the day.
We are looking forward to next year when we will enter again and more students will get to experience playing rugby league (the greatest game of all!).
Mr Allen
Coaching Coordinator
Student Free Day
Please be aware that Friday 2 September (end of Week 8) is a student free day in all public schools across Queensland. As a result, our school will be closed to students on this day. Our Outside School Hours Care program will be open all day as per Vacation Care hours.
2023 Classes
At the start of next term, we will begin the process of developing class lists for 2023. This process is always predicted for the beginning of the school year and confirmed on the eighth day of the new school year. At Buderim Mountain State School, we have a very detailed process, which takes place over a number of weeks to create classes. This includes use of a software program to assist with the creation of classes based on gender, academics and appropriate learning partners.
If parents have any specific requests regarding their child’s placement for 2023, please complete the following survey by Friday 16 September:
Please be aware of the following:
- Parents are not able to request a specific teacher for their child.
- Please do not submit any requests for your child to be placed with another child, as all children will do this at school, by choosing up to 5 learning partners they would like to be in a class with – we do guarantee that they will be placed with at least 1 of the learning partners they have requested.
- Generally, the request needs to identify characteristics or concerns relating to your child which you feel need to be taken into consideration in regards to class placement.
- Students will be informed of their provisional 2023 class in the final week of the school year (Wednesday 7 December) via an email to parents.
- While all requests are given due consideration, please be aware that it is not always possible to guarantee these requests.
- We are unable to consider any requests submitted after the due date (end of Term 3).
The Perks Project
Our most recent PERKS lesson focussed on Friendship.
Mrs Brennan used a book called “Friendship is like a See Saw” written by local author and psychologist Shona Innes.
This book explores the “ups and downs” that occur in friendships and the tricky moments that can arise. We talked about how to keep our friendship see saw balanced.
Students explored the following:
- What makes a good friend?
- Making and Keeping friends
- My very best friend will always be me – when we are a good friend to ourselves, we are able to be a good friend to others and keep the see saw balanced.
- Social skills that balance the friendship see saw
- Behaviours that tip the friendship see saw
- What to do when the friendship see saw is tipped
Teachers will refer to our Friendship See Saw poster below in conversations with students.
Shona Innes has written a series of books called BIG HUG BOOKS. They will be available for borrowing from our school library.
GRATITUDE
As we approach Father’s Day we will also be talking about and practising GRATITUDE.
What is Gratitude?
Gratitude is pausing to notice and appreciate the things that we often take for granted, like having a place to live, food, clean water, friends, family, even computer access. It's taking a moment to reflect on how fortunate we are when something good happens — whether it's a small thing or a big thing.
How to Teach Children Gratitude
- Research and Evidence
- Saying Thank You
- Ask Gratitude Questions
- Perform Acts of Kindness
- Model Gratitude –Talk about the things you are grateful for. ...
- Family Gratitude Project & tell your kids why you are grateful for them. ...
- Support a charitable event or organisation. ...
- Establish a Gratitude Ritual – talk about what you are grateful for regularly with your children
- Look for the Silver Lining
- Be consistent
3 Ways to Practise Gratitude
- Notice good things, look for them, appreciate them
- Savour, absorb, and really pay attention to those good things
- Express your gratitude to yourself, write it down, or thank someone
How do you show gratitude?
Say: "It was really kind of you to…," "It really helped me out when you…," "You did me a big favour when…," "Thank you for listening when…," "I really appreciated it when you taught me…," or "Thank you for being there when…." You also can write your gratitude in a letter. Express gratitude by doing a kindness.

Tuckshop Ordering & Food Allergies
Tuckshop Ordering and Food Allergies:
To ensure the safety of all students and especially those who are at risk of an anaphylactic reaction to certain food allergens, it is a requirement that parents/carers follow the procedure below when ordering from the school’s tuckshop, The Banksia Café.
All families who have children with food allergies which result in anaphylaxis need to order online only. Families must communicate and declare the student’s food allergy by using the 'Allergen Alert' tab on Flexi Schools for each and every order, EVERY TIME, this includes ordering for both breaks. Following this procedure will allow us to have a clear idea of the allergens thus providing safer management of orders and ensuring that orders are correctly handled, limiting the potential of any cross contamination.

Trivia Night
Trivia Night was a *HUGE* success – and it was so much fun! Thank you to everyone who came along and supported us. We're pleased to announce we raised $10,000 to put towards the new playground near the tuckshop.
The theme was TV which included streaming, free-to-air and movies. Teams dressed up as The Block, NCIS, A group of Extras, Peaky Blinders, Playschool, Kath & Kim, Farmer Wants a Wife, and the Executive Team went as Scrubs. But The Handmaidens took out the first prize, winning the competition – never underestimate a Handmaiden because they are fierce!
The fabulous Miss Lady Saint Diva hosted and entertained – and I'm sure there are a lot of sore cheeks from all that smiling and laughter – she certainly was a hoot!
A massive shout out to our sponsors and businesses that donated auction and raffle prizes. Check out all these excellent businesses who supported the event and the photo gallery using the link below.
