Staff Recognition Day
Each year, a special afternoon tea is held for all of our Buderim Mountain State School staff to acknowledge the terrific contribution they make to our school each and every day.
We have approximately 120 staff members at Buderim including teachers, cleaners, teacher aides, administration and office staff, support staff and ground staff. It is this group of very dedicated and hard working staff who help to make Buderim Mountain State School such an excellent school.
A huge thank you must go to our P&C and Fiona from the Banksia Café for organizing the catering for the afternoon tea. Our staff felt very appreciated and spoilt.
2023 School Review
In 2023, our school will be reviewed by the Education department as part of its commitment to review all schools at least once every four years. In preparation for this review as well as gathering insights to inform our future strategic plan (2023-2026), we would like to gather community feedback.
It would be greatly appreciated if you could complete this anonymous survey, providing feedback about the school’s strengths and potential areas for improvement. This survey will remain open until the end of the term.
Optiminds
Saturday 27th August was the Sunshine Coast Regional Opti- Minds event. Three BMSS teams attended Caloundra Christian College to participate in the event. Our school entered into Media, Social Sciences and Language Literature.
The Media challenge was to incorporate the myth of the Phoenix rising from the ashes, and represent it in a media format.
The Social Sciences challenge was to create an 8 to 10 minute play of the negative Opti- Topians moving to the world of Latitudia, meeting the Hopi- Topians there, who only see the positive in everything.
The Language Literature challenge was to create an 8 to 10 minute play about rising above the ashes in difficult situations.
The day was filled to the brim with happiness, fun, and excitement.
All competitors were asked to complete a Spontaneous Challenge, which was a picture of a girl holding a piece of paper. The teams had to come up with what was written on the paper, who wrote it, and why it was written.
At the end of the day, the awards ceremony was held, to find out the winners. All Buderim teams received the Spirit of Opti- Minds Award, along with Good Samaritans, and Kuluin State School. To add to the awards, both of Buderim’s Media and Social Sciences teams received first place, and Buderim’s Language Literature team received honours. We are very grateful to Miss Cuthbertson, Mrs Dalton, Miss O’Keefe and Mrs Williams. who gave up their time to assist our teams.

Sunshine Coast Instrumental Music Excellence Program
Congratulations to the Year 6 students who were selected to participate in the Intermediate & Advanced Instrumental Music Workshops over 4 days at Buderim Lifepointe Church at the end of last term:
Advanced Workshop: Anna (Clarinet), Sophia (Clarinet), Ryder (Tenor Saxophone), Aaron (Trumpet), Emily (Percussion), Rosa (Percussion), Aisha (Violin), Alessandra (Violin), Fletcher (Violin), Hayoon (Violin), Jihu (Violin), Maya (Violin), Natalie (Violin), Abbey (Viola), Chloe (Viola), Anna (Cello) and Ivy (Double Bass).
Intermediate Workshop: Isla (Clarinet), Chloe (Alto Saxophone), Hunter (Alto Saxophone), Billy (Trombone), Bryon (Tuba), Eva, (Flute), Hayden (Baritone), Charlotte (Violin), Ella (Violin), Heidi (Violin), Isla (Violin), Luke (violin) and Harper (Cello). It was great to see these 31 students nominated for this program
The students attended rehearsal workshops where they experienced Zumba and body percussion activities. I know the students, like myself were buzzing with excitement at the end of each day. The workshops concluded with a concert for parents and families. It was incredible to hear the quality of the performance after only a couple of days of rehearsals.
This was a fantastic opportunity for our musicians to meet students from 22 other Sunshine Coast schools, and to extend their playing ability. It will be wonderful to see next year’s students have the same opportunity.
SCIMEP Story written by Emily, Isla, Chloe & Sophia (Year 6 students)
We were selected for the Intermediate and Advanced SCIMEP 2022. It was held at Lifepointe Church, Buderim which was a great venue. We really enjoyed the teachers who taught the great band pieces that made the day much more fun. We also had a special conductor who taught dynamics and how to sit. We made friends from other schools who played the same instrument so we had lots of fun conversations. We had the chance to do Zumba and body percussion which were thrilling events. The concert at the end of the day was amazing and our parents loved it. Overall it was a very enjoyable experience and we would be happy to do it again.
Year 6 Musicians Shine on Stage
Congratulations to the two small ensembles that performed on parade last term– Flute quartet (Ava, Daisy, Minka & Eva) and Mixed Ensemble (Anna, Bryon, Ryder & Hunter). It was excellent to see the students take to the stage and perform with enthusiasm and confidence. The audience was very interested in seeing and hearing the instruments and they showed their appreciation by clapping loudly at the end. Great job Year 6 musicians.
Musically yours,
Margot Payne (Band Teacher) - mpayn20@eq.edu.au
Stuart Scullett-Dean (String Teacher) - sscul2@eq.edu.au

Science Night
After a few false starts in recent years due to COVID we finally had a chance to celebrate Science with the school’s second ‘Science Night’. The afternoon started out with our Student Leaders conducting experiments with their younger peers in the Year 2/3 undercover area. The library was packed with people playing Operation, classic arcade games, testing their nerve with Skill Testers and the Lego Sumo-bots were a huge success in the STEM lab. Raphael from Street Science was also kept extremely busy making a little over 100 individual cups of slime for the students.
Raphael then put on an awesome show for all in attendance with explosions, fire and some extremely cold liquid nitrogen. This was a huge hit with the audience, both young and old.
Dr Brad Tucker beamed in via Zoom from Canberra to discuss all things space including the current Artemis project. Even some of our younger scientists got to ask Brad some questions, in which we found out that the Sun ‘burps’!
All in all, it was a great night and plenty of fun was had by one and all.
A huge thanks goes out to the P & C for helping to bring the night together (and of course for the yummy food supplied by the Banksia Café).
Another thanks goes to the staff who helped to put the night together and finally to our Student Leaders who really shone on the night in their role as educators and teachers of Science.
Thanks for your support.
Mr. Johnson

Prep Fathers/Special Person Morning
On Thursday the 1st of September the Prep classes paid tribute to all our Fathers and Special People in our lives. We really enjoyed hosting a Special Someone event in our classrooms! Our special people joined us as we played dress ups, made Lego creations, painted portraits of our loved ones, and built catapults. The children enjoyed sharing this time with the important people in their lives. Thank you to all the dads and special people in the lives of our BMSS students. We as a school community appreciate all you do.

Book Week
Students and staff celebrated Book Week from Monday 22rd August to Friday 26th August. This year’s theme was: ‘Dreaming with Eyes Open’
Our library showcased the shortlisted books and students had the opportunity to listen to and read them throughout the week. Thank you to all teachers and classes for the outstanding artwork that has been displayed for the event.
On Thursday 25th August, all students were encouraged to come dressed as their favourite book character. Students, parents and teachers made a huge effort to design, create and craft their costumes for the day. We have some wonderful photos to share with you.

P-3 Sports Fun Day
On the last Thursday of Term 3, we were lucky enough to have a Prep – 3 Fun Day on the oval, because of great weather. During the day, we were involved in thirteen activities including basketball, sprints, soccer, long jump, parachute, Rob the Nest, skipping, javelin, Tug of War, Noughts and Crosses, Captain Ball, Tunnel Ball and Grip Ball.
We stayed with our own class and rotated through the activities one by one. The school leaders helped at each activity as well. They were excellent helpers and gave us a lot of encouragement. All of the activities were lots of fun, but our favourite was Tug of War.
Thanks to Ms Hemingway for organising an awesome day for us!

Prep D & Prep F Chambers Island Excursion
Prep D and Prep F ventured out on their first excursion to Chambers Island. For many, this was their first time travelling by bus, so this was very exciting.
Other highlights include observing the wildlife – toad fish, soldier crabs, hairy crabs, walking in the water, mud and sand and protecting our lunch from the pesky butcher bird. We learnt to use our senses to understand the environment and discuss the needs of living things.
This exciting day was made possible by the generous assistance from our parents. We all came back to school with more knowledge and very tired bodies.

Year 1 Fire Safety
Today we learnt about fire safety. We learnt to get down low and go, go, go. We also learnt about good fire and bad fires. We sprayed the gushing water out of the long hose. The fire truck had big pincers and ginormous pliers.
Finnegan E
Today we learnt about fire safety. If you need a fire truck the number that you call is 000. If there is a fire in your house you get down low and go go go. If you have fire on your clothes you need to stop drop and roll. My favourite part about the fire truck is when we got to spray the hose. It was fun and I like fire trucks.
Lucy A
Today we learnt about fire safety. We learnt how to get out and stay out of bad fires, so that you what to do know when you're older, and to also provide safety. The fire truck had buttons and controls. When we got to the hose we got to spray it.
Matthew B
Today we learnt about fire safety like stop drop and roll, you do this when your pants are on fire. Then we learnt about great fires and terrible fires. The great fires have a smiley koala but when it was a terrible fire the koala was a cranky pants. Then we learnt about get down low and go go go!
Keira O
Today we learnt about fire safety. Three things we learnt is when there is a fire we need to call 000. When there is a fire we have to get down low and go, go, go. When there is a fire on our self we have to stop drop and roll. We do not get close to big fires and don’t make a fire too high.
Hadley A
Year 5/6 Interschool Sport
Unfortunately we were only able to have one week of interschool sport but a great time was had by all participants from year five and six. The emphasis on the day was involvement and many students got to attempt a sport they had never played before. Here is a brief report from each sport.
NRL Tag
We played on the lush fields of Maroochydore Rugby League Grounds. The teams we played against included Kuluin SS, Sienna and Mooloolaba SS. Our teams participated with great enthusiasm and it was essential to keep the fluids up as it was quite a hot day. Thanks to the volunteers from the local touch association who refereed our games. Many great tries were scored by the Buderim Team. Some of our students had never played NRL tag before but despite this it was a huge learning curve for many.
Rugby League
We played at Cotton Tree grounds against Stella Maris. All teams played hard and enjoyed their games. One of our Rugby League players was so excited about playing he even left one of his boots on the wrong bus. Luckily his mother was able to problem solve.
Netball
We played at Fisherman’s Road against Kuluin SS, Mooloolaba SS, Stella Maris and Sienna. All teams played really well and did our school proud. There was plenty of room at the fields to practise before the game. Some players were confused initially and scored at the wrong end. However, their team mates quickly reminded them of what end to score at. A great time was had by all. Some newcomers to the sport (particularly the boys) realised the game was harder than what was initially thought.
Soccer
At Fisherman’s Rd we played against other local schools and had a great time. The teams involved included Mooloolaba SS, Maroochydore SS and Sienna. Some players found the game challenging and seven a side was fantastic as many were highly involved. There was no taking it easy in seven a side.
AFL
AFL was played at Fisherman’s Road against Stella Maris, Kuluin SS and Mooloolaba SS. There were some close games but Mooloolaba SS proved to be fairly strong.
Billy Moore Cup Rugby League Competition
Buderim Mountain entered four sides into the 2022 Billy Moore Gala Day. This is a rugby league carnival run by the NRL development officers to maximise participation for children in grades 5 and 6.
This event once ran from grades 3 to 6 but it became too big to run on the one day in the one location. They have split the Sunshine Coast into 2 zones and restricted the grades. Despite this it has now grown to having 50 different teams with approximately 10 kids per side. Making it a big event on the school Rugby League calendar.
The day was excellent in terms of organisation, participation and results.
Between our four teams – Year 5 Maroons – Year 5 Greens – Year 6 Maroons – Year 6 Greens – we played 16 games for 12 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses. While the day was focussed on being non-competitive, it is always nice to go away with some positive results. I will add that the children that gave Rugby League a go, improved out of sight. Even if this is the only League they will ever play, I am confident it will have been a great experience. I certainly saw some players that I would love to see playing club footy in the future.
Thank you to Mr Johnson and Miss Page for your coaching in the lead up and good work on the day. Thanks to Mr Allan who also helped with coaching a team on the day.
We are looking forward to next year when we will enter again and more students will get to experience playing rugby league (the greatest game of all!).
Mr Allen
Coaching Coordinator
Lightning Cup Primary Schools Netball Competition
On the last Wednesday of Term 3 BMSS Year 6 students competed at the Inaugural ‘Lightning Netball Cup’ at Maroochydore Sports Complex.
The competitive, inclusive carnival included 3 divisions in which BMSS fielded a team in each division- Championship (Lightning Cup), Development (Thunder Cup) and Boys (Storm Cup).
A Lightning Strike Zone was set up on the day, including music, merchandise, free hair braiding and temporary tattoos, food trucks, giveaways and inflatable games, as well as special appearances and signing sessions throughout the day by Lightning players.
Congratulations to all our teams who competitively competed in some hard fought, close matches throughout the day.

2023 Year 6 Student Leadership Selection Process
Throughout Term 4, our Year 5 students have the opportunity to be part of the 2023 Student Leader selection process. Year 5 students have been provided with information on the selection process and this is also attached. Timelines and dates have also been listed on the calendar in this newsletter as well as on the website. All leadership positions for 2023 will be announced prior to the end of the school year.
Preparing for 2023
To ensure we are able to plan as accurately as possible, families are asked to assist with the following:
- Letting any families know, who are intending to have students enrol in any P-6 year level at BMSS, to submit an enrolment form at the school office asap.
- Letting the office staff know of any students who are transferring to other schools in 2023 in an email via info@buderimmountainss.eq.edu.au
- Letting the office staff know of any students who will not be present from the beginning of the school year (eg. For holidays). It is crucial that we know of all students who will be returning, but may be away at the beginning of the school year as they are also counted in our total enrolment and will contribute to maximising the number of teachers we are entitled to. This in turn, reduces the ratio of teachers to students across the school. Once again, please email this information to info@buderimmountainss.eq.edu.au.
The Perks Project
In Term 3 both of our PERKS lessons focussed on Friendship.
In the second lesson, students revisited the friendship see saw and were introduced to a model to help them resolve issues that may arise in friendship groups. This process was modelled for the students, then they participated in completing a shared one with Mrs Brennan and their class teacher. Students have the framework in their classrooms to practise and use when necessary.
We call it the POOCH method and looks like this:
This week, all students in Years 1 to 6 completed a PERKS lesson focussed on RESILIENCE.
We talked about RESILIENCE as being the ability to bounce back again and again when bad things happen or things don’t go the way we would like.
Students will be given some strategies to use when situations arise that are going to be difficult and challenging for them.
The following posters will be used with different age groups and will be placed in all classrooms. You may wish to talk to your children about RESILIENCE and some potential situations at home where they may need to be resilient.
It is important children understand that:
- Bad things will happen
- Things won’t always work out the way I want them to
- I will find some things challenging
- I will feel sad or unhappy about things from time to time
- It’s okay to make mistakes
- Adults also have to practise being resilient
The most important thing is how they deal with these situations (bounce back) and move on.
Curriculum Corner
Year Level Planning Meetings
Late last term, we had our year level planning days in preparation for the Term 4 curriculum delivery. Teachers from each year level spent a full day unpacking the curriculum requirements and the summative assessment tasks. We discussed and brainstormed ways we can help our students aim for the ‘A’ and ‘B’ descriptors in the assessment tasks.
These year level planning days at the end of each term (to prepare for the following term) are vital in ensuring continuity across all classes in each year level. They give our students the best possible access to the Australian Curriculum, while also differentiating the curriculum and teaching strategies based on each student’s academic needs.
Our Curriculum Overviews are located on the website.
Kristie O’Keefe
(Head of Curriculum)
Containers for Change
The student leaders have initiated a fund-raising activity in order to raise money for the homeless. Students are able to deposit their empty popper containers in the blue bins at school. The blue bins will be located in most eating areas.
Families can also donate by taking their eligible containers to a Containers for Change depot and using the code below:
BMSS Community Kitchen
Our BMSS Community Kitchen is up and running and we would love the help and support from anyone who has the ability to donate;
- Time - volunteers to help run our Breakfast Club in Term 1, 2023 or our term cook ups.
- Food - any food donations (contact Fiona for specific needs)
- Monetary donations
If you are able to provide any support, large or small, please contact Fiona at Banksia Cafe;
We appreciate your support!
Parades
Parades will continue each week at the following times and we have resumed face to face parades with parents welcome to attend:
- Tuesday Prep & Year 1 2:20pm
- Wednesday Year 2 2:20pm
- Thursday Year 3 & 4 2:20pm
- Friday Year 5 & 6 2:20pm

Tuckshop Ordering & Food Allergies
Tuckshop Ordering and Food Allergies:
To ensure the safety of all students and especially those who are at risk of an anaphylactic reaction to certain food allergens, it is a requirement that parents/carers follow the procedure below when ordering from the school’s tuckshop, The Banksia Café.
All families who have children with food allergies which result in anaphylaxis need to order online only. Families must communicate and declare the student’s food allergy by using the 'Allergen Alert' tab on Flexi Schools for each and every order, EVERY TIME, this includes ordering for both breaks. Following this procedure will allow us to have a clear idea of the allergens thus providing safer management of orders and ensuring that orders are correctly handled, limiting the potential of any cross contamination.

OSHC
The Spring Vacation Care program was a huge success!
The children loved competing in The Amazing Race, Cartoon Connection and Buderim Festival! But, of course, the program's highlight was the excursion to Dreamworld and everyone – kids and educators - had a ball.
OSHC now uses the 'Xplor' app for bookings. This term will get busy fast, so get organised and make your bookings for the term ahead so you don't miss out!
