School Review
In 2023, our school will be reviewed by the Education Department as part of its commitment to review all schools at least once every four years. In preparation for this review as well as gathering insights to inform our future strategic plan (2023-2026), we would like to gather community feedback.
It would be greatly appreciated if you could complete this anonymous survey, providing feedback about the school’s strengths and potential areas for improvement. This survey will remain open until the end of the term.
2022 School Opinion Survey Highlights
A big thank you to our parents and staff for completing the School Opinion Surveys again in 2022. The surveys are implemented confidentially through our Central Office and we are pleased with the following highlights for 2022. The results below include satisfaction with each question across Buderim Mountain State School, schools across North Coast Region as well as schools across Queensland:
Optiminds
On the 22nd and 23rd of October, two teams from Buderim Mountain State School participated in the Opti-Minds State Finals 2022, at the University of Queensland in Brisbane. Both teams were in different categories; Social Sciences and Media Communications.
The first day was the ideas market, where teams had to come up with an idea that would make a better future for everyone. The Social Sciences had the idea of saving the Northern Hairy Nosed Wombat. The Media group decided it was important to ‘Stop using palm oil to save the orangutans.’ Students wandered around the room looking at other displays and asking questions.
In the afternoon, students watched a science show and participated in a lot of different activities run by the university. That night, there was a shindig to celebrate Opti-Minds where both teams danced the night away with Miss O’Keefe to the special DJ.
On Sunday all teams were allocated a room and had to stay there for around 3 hours with a supervisor from another school. In that three hours, the teams created a presentation on change. The Media and Communications group wrote a script, made props, filmed scenes on an ipad, made a powerpoint and edited their film ready for presenting. The Social Sciences group wrote a script, made some props and practised their play.
During the three hours, all teams also worked on a spontaneous challenge. Students were given a logo and in ten minutes they had to come up with their most creative response to what business owned the logo. Teams were judged on their cooperation and creativity as well as timing.
In the afternoon, all students presented their work to fellow students and adults. The results were then announced in the evening with the Media and Communications group winning the state finals for their presentation.
Well done to everyone who participated in Opti-Minds this year and thank you to all of the teachers who coached the different teams.

2023 Student Leaders
Over recent weeks, we have finalised the selection process for our 2023 Student Leadership positions. A big thank you to all students who applied for positions, which was a challenging selection process due to the quality and calibre of our applicants. Congratulations to the following students who have been selected for 2023:
Telling Stories - Shortlist Announcement
Congratulations to Gemma, Year 5, who was shortlisted for the Short Story Competition, Telling Stories, for young writers on the Sunshine Coast and Hinterland. There were over 180 entries, making it a difficult judging process.
Gemma was invited to the Awards Evening on 31 October, held at UniSC Innovation Centre. We congratulate her on entry.
We wish to congratulate all students who entered the competition, they should be very proud of themselves!.
Hunter D - Nepal Mountain Climbing
My holiday was great and I also learnt some things about Nepal's culture as well. I took a photo of the banner at high camp as it would be too cold and windy at the top to take the picture. In the photo you can see Mount Everest in the background. Unfortunately, I did not summit due to getting slight altitude sickness on my way from high camp to summit, but I am very proud of what I achieved as it was very challenging. I had to turn around and go back to high camp with Sunduk (one of our guides who has summited Mt Everest 13 times), but I made it past 6000m. We had 22 people in our group and only 12 people made it to summit (including my mum and dad). We did get a helicopter from one of the villages (Kote) to Kathmandu which was exciting.

Tuckshop Day
Tuckshop Day was celebrated last week as we shared a big thank you for everyone who assists with ensuring our tuckshop runs so well. Fiona and her team do a terrific job and we are very thankful for this. Once again this year, our classes passed on cards and messages of appreciation.
Volunteer Morning Tea
A special morning tea will be held on Wednesday 30 November from 9am in the Hall, to acknowledge the many volunteers we have had in our school throughout 2022. Our volunteers range from classroom support, the P&C and tuckshop to swimming lessons, working bees and programs like Walk to School and Story Dogs.
Year 5 Street Science Incursion
This week, all of Year Five participated in the Science Street incursion. We learnt about Solids, Liquids, and Gases. Tazz, the person who ran the first display, put on an awesome show! The tests she displayed were very cool and interesting. She showed us lots of fascinating experiments that kept us entertained and educated at the same time. We learnt that Liquid Nitrogen is below -196 degrees Celsius, so when it was taken out of its container, it began to boil! The gas from it boiling mixed with water that Tazz poured in was harmless! A couple of volunteers got to smell, taste, and feel it! Besides the fact that it was cold, it felt, smelt, and tasted like nothing. (I was a volunteer).
One of the engaging experiments she presented to us was when she made a balloon explode. Tazz set magnesium on fire, which created a very bright light, then sprayed a colourless mixture into the flames, which turned them certain colours! In the second session, we conducted a series of experiments where we created a polymer, then had to test it so we could figure out if it was a Liquid, Solid or Gas. It was all very enjoyable. We also made fake snow out of water and baby powder that was processed differently. Steven, another scientist helped Tazz and the students conduct experiments and assist in pretty much everything. We all loved it.
All of Year Five enjoyed these fun sessions, and we appreciate Tazz and Steven putting in time and effort to make our time fun. We all really liked this fun experience, and were all very happy we got to take our products home. Thank you so much for such a fun time, we all appreciated it. Again, a big thank you from all of Year Five and all Teachers.

Moses Mbye Rugby League Gala Day
On the 28th of October, Buderim Mountain entered four sides, 42 players, into the 2022 Moses Mbye Gala Day. This is a rugby league carnival run by the NRL development officers to maximise participation for children from grades 3 and 4.
The Region was broken into North and South. We attended the South Coast date at Beerwah Rugby League Club. The day was excellent in terms of organisation, participation and results. Also, pretty warm, but a lovely breeze was able to keep us cool.
Between our four teams – Year 4 Experienced – Year 4 Non-experienced – Year 3 Experienced – Year 3 Non-experienced – we played 13 games in total. It is always nice to go away with some positive results. Between the teams we had 5 wins, 1 loss and 7 draws. The day is really about participation not results and you can see the games were generally tight and played in a great spirit.
Thank you to Mr Johnson, Miss Page and Mr Jackson for your coaching and good work on the day.
We are looking forward to next year when we will enter again and more students will get to experience playing rugby league.

Year 4 Waste Reduction Incursion
Did you know that:
- Only glass jars and bottles that contain a liquid or food can be recycled?
- Recycled packages that are put in plastic bags end up in landfill?
- Soft plastics such as bread bags and the plastic your toilet rolls come can be recycled, but we need to take them to supermarkets to be recycled through REDcycle and not put in our yellow lid bin?
- It takes 50 years for a take away coffee cup to break down and they CAN NOT go in the recycling bin?
- All plastic containers have a triangle symbol on them? This is not always a recycling symbol, it is saying what type of plastic it is. All plastic with a recycle logo can go in the recycling bin.
These were all valuable tips the Year 4 students learnt during a workshop, presented by the Sunshine Coast Council, called Ready Steady Recycle on Wednesday 19 October. As part of the HASS unit this Semester, 'Using the Earth’s resources sustainably', students have now learnt the rules for recycling, are on their way to becoming better recyclers and have learnt how to close the loop on a material’s life cycle.
In addition, students also learnt:
- How to save the planet and valuable recyclable resources.
- The rules for recycling
- How to conserve nature's finite resources and close the loop on a material’s life cycle.
A virtual tour of the local Material Recovery Facility better known as the MRF revealed where recyclables go, how they are sorted and what they are turned into.
So look out parents, there are some motivated sustainability warriors in our community to help us all to REDUCE, REUSE, REPLACE, REPURPOSE AND RECYCLE!
From 4/5MC
Waste 2 Resource
Our class recently had an incursion about waste and recycling. We met a nice lady called Tia who explained how a lot of our waste goes to landfill. She also taught us that not everything has to go into the general waste. Some can be recycled or even put in a compost bin like old fruit veggies and even paper towels. Some things they found in the recycling bin at the MRF, can’t be recycled such as old used tissues, nappies, bicycle parts and even car tyres. These CAN’T be recycled.
Tia also showed us that there’s a Material Recovery Facility where machines sort glass, paper, steel and even aluminium.
She also said the only things we can recycle are:
Glass bottles and jars, steel cans or aerosols;
Aluminium, magazines, newspaper, cardboard boxes, milk and juice bottles can also be recycled.
Tia also gave us a sheet to fill out for a chance to go to Sea Life at Mooloolaba.
I learnt a lot about the process of waste and recycling. Thank you Tia.
Recount by AJ 4RB
Waste Incursion
At the incursion, the lady named Tia taught us about waste and gave us activities to do. One of them was sorting pictures of waste into little bins and another game was “best to worst” strategies. 1 avoid, 2 reduce, 3 re-use, 4 recycle, 5 dispose. Avoiding waste in the first place is the best. But to me, re-use is the best, because you buy it but then you can reuse it. Did you know that our waste that goes to landfill is half organic? One quarter is recycling and the other quarter is general waste.
Overall, I thought the incursion was very interesting because I was surprised at how much waste we produce. The games were fun too.

Year 6 Surfing
Term 4 Surfing kicked off back in Week 3 with what could only be described as poor conditions, with a northerly blowing, the waves were not optimal. However, this did not deter the students as they battled away and still had a great time.
Over the last couple of weeks the sessions have been held in the calmer waters of Mooloolaba – just south of the surf club with Mother Nature also producing better weather, mind you it was a tad chilly last Friday (the kids were probably warmer in the water than out). The swell has been much gentler, with the students having a great time. Many of this term’s surfers have returned from Term 1.
This term’s sessions wind up next Friday (November 18th). Surfing will be offered again in Term 1, 2023. Keep an eye out early next year for the permission slips.
A big shout out to the Maroochy Surf School who provide the students with their boards, rash shirts and plenty of expertise about surfing and how to read the conditions. Also a big thanks to the parents who get their children up and down to the beach for the early starts.
Mr J and Mr Allan
PS – Thanks to Isla S’ mother for the awesome whole group shots from Week 1
Year 1 Science Incursion
Last week we enjoyed a science show learning all about light and sound. It was a great experience for all to extend our learning and consolidate our understanding about sources of light and how sounds are made and changed.
I learnt that dogs can’t see green grass. Green and red and blue light makes white light!! I also learnt that I can’t see ultra-violet light. – Trey
I learnt that the faster the vibrations, the higher the sound is. I loved the special glasses because if you look into them everything looks rainbow. – Sandra
I loved when Mrs Powell was cutting the straw and the sound went higher and higher. Also when the slinky and the cup made a shooting sound like star wars. Also I liked the bracelet because it changed colour. – Jayden
I learnt about light and sound. My favourite bit about light was when we got to make bead bracelets and looked through the special glasses. My favourite bit about sound was when she got a tube and spun it. It made a high sound when she spun it really fast. – Airlie
I loved when she said dogs can’t see green. I was so surprised about that because my dogs are loved but I had no idea that they can’t see green! It was fascinating that she said that. – Zara
I learnt that when the bead bracelet changes colours it’s telling you that you need to put sunscreen on. I love that at the end of the lesson we could play with the cool instruments. My favourite bit was when Freya showed us the slinky and the cup made a light saver sound from Star Wars. – Coco

Prep Outdoor Day
A Recipe for a Fantastic Day
Take six creative Prep teachers, a host of dedicated teacher aides and more than 150 excited children.
Thread together handfuls of dyed pasta, painted card and plastic bottle tops and combine with liberal amounts of bubbles, water, shaving cream, kinetic sand and ice. Throw in the makings of Wombat Stew (don’t forget the one fat wombat). Squeeze and mould with playdough gumnuts, leaves and sticks and go on a Nature Walk.
Bake gently under a clear blue sky.
And what do you get?
Laughter, play and learning and excited engaged and slightly grubby Buderim Prep children and visitors from Milford Lodge and Little Village Care who had a memorable and fun OUTDOOR CLASSROOM DAY.
The Perks Project
KINDNESS WEEK
Week 6 is KINDNESS WEEK at BMSS. It is the “K” in PERKS. We will all be reflecting on our behaviour and communication to practise being a DOLPHIN and spread KINDNESS.
Please help by talking to your children about this at home. There are also lots of great picture books in our library that promote kindness.
On our parades this week we spoke with the students about the Six Kindness Concepts.
KINDNESS CONCEPTS
Caring - Feeling and showing concern for others.
Compassion - Being aware when others are sick, sad, or hurt and wanting to help.
Respect - Treating people, places, and things with kindness.
Responsibility - Being reliable to do the things that are expected or required of you.
Helpfulness - Assisting or serving others in a kind way.
Self-Care - Taking care of yourself through kind words, actions, and thoughts.
2023 Booklists and SRS Letters
This week, all families were emailed the 2023 Booklists and 2023 SRS Letters. If you have not yet received this email, please check your junk and/or spam email folders.
The 2023 Booklists and 2023 SRS Letters can also be found on our website.
Please click on the link below to take you directly to our school website, where the 2023 Booklists and 2023 SRS Letters can be found under 'Enrolling at our school' on the right hand side under 'Related links'.
Preparing for 2023
To ensure we are able to plan as accurately as possible, families are asked to assist with the following:
- Letting any families know, who are intending to have students enrol in any P-6 year level at BMSS, to submit an enrolment form at the school office
- Letting the office staff know of any students who are transferring to other schools in 2023 in an email via info@buderimmountainss.eq.edu.au
- Letting the office staff know of any students who will not be present from the beginning of the school year (eg. For holidays). It is crucial that we know of all students who will be returning, but may be away at the beginning of the school year as they are also counted in our total enrolment and will contribute to maximising the number of teachers we are entitled to. This in turn, reduces the ratio of teachers to students across the school. Once again, please email this information to info@buderimmountainss.eq.edu.au
Curriculum Corner
Academic Reporting
We will be emailing your child’s Semester 2 report card Tuesday, Week 10. Please ensure all email addresses are up-to-date with the main office. The report database emails directly to the address/es we have saved in the system.
It is important to keep in mind that your child’s overall result for the report card is based on the summative assessment tasks for this semester. While we teach many concepts within each learning area, the semester grade is based on the summative assessment as per the ‘Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Framework’ (P-12 CARF) – curriculum implementation for state schools.
The ‘C’ standard means ‘working at level’ (Australian Curriculum Achievement Standard). The A/B levels relate to students applying their skills and knowledge in more complex ways within the same year level content. Each summative task gives students the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities within these higher levels.
Assessment
Our teachers use a variety of assessment tasks to assess our students’ progress.
At the start of each school year, teachers have a detailed excel report with their students’ data from the previous school year. It contains levels of achievement and tracking of summative and diagnostic data. Teachers use this data to cater for our students from the first day. It assists them with differentiating and tracking their students’ progress all year.
There are three types of assessment:
- Summative – assesses our students based on the Australian Curriculum Achievement Standard (A-E with C standard ‘working at level’); also known as ‘assessment of learning’
- Diagnostic – assesses using data to inform teaching, differentiation and track progress (e.g. reading levels); also known as ‘assessment for learning’
- Formative – occurs during lessons and teachers adjust their teaching during the learning process; used to inform lessons and differentiation; also known as ‘assessment as learning’
The Christmas break is fast approaching. You might be embarking on trips with your family. Long car trips or waiting in airport lounges are wonderful opportunities to engage your children in literacy and numeracy activities (learning in real-life contexts and in fun ways).
Some ideas - talking about their thinking in relation to:
- Timetables with departures and arrivals (How much time between flights?; converting 24-hour time)
- Looking at numbers on street signs – adding or multiplying the numbers
- Identifying words and spelling patterns on signs
- Making up words starting with each letter from car licence plates
- Adding or multiplying numbers on car licence plates
- A classic which is great for our younger students: Eye Spy
Please keep encouraging your children to read over the break.
Ask them questions such as:
- What do you know about the characters in the book?
- What is your favourite part of the book and why?
- For non-fiction texts: What did you learn from reading the book?
Our Curriculum Overviews are located on the website.

Bowls Club Parking Request
We have had a request from the Buderim Bowls Club on Elizabeth Street in relation to parking. A reminder to all parents that the parking at the Bowls Club is on private property, however the Bowls Club is happy for parents to park in their carpark when it is open. The Bowls Club members have just requested that parents do not reverse in where possible and/or ensure car engines are turned off if parking for extended periods so that the exhaust fumes don’t hinder the bowlers. Thank you for your assistance with this.

Tuckshop Ordering & Food Allergies
Tuckshop Ordering and Food Allergies:
To ensure the safety of all students and especially those who are at risk of an anaphylactic reaction to certain food allergens, it is a requirement that parents/carers follow the procedure below when ordering from the school’s tuckshop, The Banksia Café.
All families who have children with food allergies which result in anaphylaxis need to order online only. Families must communicate and declare the student’s food allergy by using the 'Allergen Alert' tab on Flexi Schools for each and every order, EVERY TIME, this includes ordering for both breaks. Following this procedure will allow us to have a clear idea of the allergens thus providing safer management of orders and ensuring that orders are correctly handled, limiting the potential of any cross contamination.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Did you know? If your child has a uniform needing a little TLC, we recycle buttons and dress ties and have a supply in the Uniform Shop – available at no charge. So drop into the shop or email uniform@bmsspandc.org, and we'll send some home.
We now stock replacement chin straps with a toggle to fit our crushable hats for $2 each. Available in the shop or on Flexischools.
Thank You
A big thank you to the sewers who answered our call out to make hair accessories out of old uniforms. There's plenty more fabric to share, so if you are looking for a sewing project, please get in touch.
Uniform Updates for 2023
Since 2019, we've absorbed small supplier price increases, but this year in particular, like most other areas of the supply chain, prices and freight have increased substantially. As a result, our prices will increase slightly as of next year, and a new price list will take effect on 1st January 2023.
Thank you for your understanding.
Starter Packs for New Families
We have starter pack pricing available for new enrolments and strive to provide second-hand uniform options to our school community. Our starter pack options can be viewed here >> https://bmsspandc.org/uniform-shop/
